autodimming mirror

well today I installed my ohc and auto dimming mirror. The ohc works fine but for some reason the autodimming mirror only works when the doors are open and then immediately shuts off when the doors are shut. What could be causing this to happen?

you don't have it wired to a constant power source. you hooked it to the wrong wire going to your dome light

So if I am understanding you correctly you only need to ground and have a 12v always hot source to the mirror?

Wouldn't the always hot source kill the battery?

I ask because this weekend I am going to finish installing my overhead console and auto dimming mirror. I only care about the auto dimming not the auto lamp feature...

Thanks,
-Nigel

you need a 12V constant and 12V switched...thats how the mirror tells when the key is off and start the timer for the autolamps delayed shut off...its super easy to do if your doing an OHC at the same time...i love my auto dim and OHC

This is how the mirror is wired in my 03 for autolamps and autodim. For autodim only, it would only need the right side of the diagram.

Awesome!

Thank you.

Do you know the wire color for the reverse wire on the 2001 ranger? Is it by the ECU? Or do I have to run a wire all the way to the rear brake/revese lights?

Thanks,
-Nigel

Black/pink. You can find this wire in the wire bundle that drops down from the left edge of the dash center stack and then runs under the carpet on the left side of the transmission tunnel.

Most of the time the reverse cancel for the autodim doesn't matter. Every once in a while it comes in handy when backing up toward a light.

I actually see two of the black/pink stripe wires at the GEM unit behind the radio... but why would there be two?

I was going to tap it but now not sure because there are two of them... Is it honestly really needed? I hate to half *** things and if it's supposed to turn off the mirror when backing up that might be helpful?

There are a limited number of color combinations and some get used for several different purposes throughout the truck. The black/pink wires at the GEM have nothing to do with the reverse lamp circuit.

Let's try it again:
