OHC Questions and Ideas..

1. Can it be installed without the metal bracket and drilling into the cab?
- I do not see why the headliner alone could not support it, so I was thinking of drilling into the headliner and having bolts with large flat washers on the other side, like the kind I used to mod the 06+ mirrors to fit my 02'.. so if I ever removed it I would have little holes instead of a huge cut out.. I would trim any plastic that would prevent it from being flush with the headliner.. I change things alot about this truck so nothing is permanent..

2. Can the temp/directional display be removed?
- I was thinking of modding a radar/laser detector in that spot and run the power from the fuse box.. trim a little from where it faces the windshield so the detector would work. It would not be visible so I would not have to worry about theft, plus I don’t care what the temp is..

These are just some ideas I had.. thinking about but not going to do anytime soon cause of $$ reasons..

I don't know about running it without the bracket, I wouldn't but thats just me. As for the display you can pull it out its held on by a couple torx screws.

1) i honestly dont think that the headliner will just hold the unit up there, unless you mounted it with some kind of glue.
You hit a bump hard enough and i think it will pull the screws right out of the headliner.
If your not 100% sure about it dont do it. I thought that too, if i ever take it down im going to have a big hole in my headliner...yep dont think i'm taking it down now, and if i did, i would go to the JY and pick up another headliner.

2) Yes the display comes out very easily.

Why would you ever remove it though?

Dunno about the headliner support way to hold it up, I would be concerned about the console vibrating loose, shifting around and/or sagging the headliner after a time, especially bouncing around off-road. The OHC is failry light but it seems to me to have enough mass to vibrate around if not secured very well. But I hear ya, cutting into the headliner is not something to rush into.

I would say yes, a radar detector would fit inside, as you can remove the guts of the display. I beleive theres a post here somewhere about that. Think I saw it when I was researching my OHC install.

Now that I think about it the only way the rader decretory would work is if you could mod the detector so you could remove the display from it and put it in place of the OHC display. Theres no room behind the display to put the body of the detector.

My theory:
The OHC is plastic and weighs little.. the radar detector would add maybe a couple ounces and maybe a few more for the garage opener.. so maybe 2lbs, 2" flat washers between the headliner and nut should be enough to hold it.. it is not a grab handle so it does not need to be over engineered.. plus most of the cheap ebay ones dont have a braket.. so I would save $$$

I change my truck alot.. I am on my 4th set of rims, 3rd set of tires, 3rd set of taillights, 3rd set of corners, 3rd 3rd brake light, 2nd set of seat covers, all in less than 4 years of ownership..

when i mounted mine i got the OHC bracker from the power roof unit which is not the full mount bracket that you see in the instruction, this one is a smaller one. And instead of drilling holes in the roof I just cut the hole small enough that it could hold the bracket and put a piece of wood behind to bolt it in place. And for the other end (where you have the garage door opener) I did a similar thing where I put a piece of wood between the liner and the hood and I bolted the unit in it and it's not going anywhere, the unit is solid in place.

How long have you run it like that?
