The drivers side seat back broke on my 2002 Ranger. So I bought some explorer seats. The ranger seats are perfectly fine except for the drivers side seat back will not stay up at all now. I know what bolt broke but really I dunno how I would replace it and I cannot believe that there was only this one little bolt holding the seat up. I'm hoping I can fix the seats and try and make back some of the money I spent on the explorer setup.

BTW Explorer seats break just as much also. I took the best looking seats I could find which were gray cloth and all the power options worked even the lumbar. I noticed that it didn't have a lever on the side for the tilt. I said to myself thats odd but I looked at the explorer right next to it and it didn't have one either. I assumed since it was full power it didn't have the lever. After I got it all wired up and swapped the seat belts over from my ranger my brother stopped over. He owns a 2000 Explorer with 100% the same seats and he had the damn lever! I then went back to the junkyard and 6 out of 7 explorers had the lever broken and the only one with the lever was a busted up leather seat. I"m going to keep it since its power and I can live with it but damn 6 outta 7 with broken handles that just shows you how well ford made these seats. On all the seats it looks like it broke in the same spot which was right where it mounts to the track. Can I get a new one or will I just have to live with it? Rant over! Goodbye...

happened on my 2000 before i bought it, it was owned by my GF cousin the back of the seat frame is held on by these small 8mm bolts at the pivot down below. I pulled the back fabric off and foam, and could get too the bolts and took them out and installed new one's i happened of have a spare set of seats laying around that where junk...

 

I noticed the broken one was a torx do I need another torx bolt or can I fit a normal one in there? One per side?

 

I have the same problem. Where is this bolt(s) located. Is that what causes the seats not to stay in place?

 

like i said i had a spare seat and used factory bolts. i can try and get a pic of where mine was might not be the same as yours

 

ahh gotcha. We are talking of the same torx bolts right? I did a temp give with a small nut and bolt on the side of the seat near the drivers door. I know its not gonna hold for long though.

 

I had to do this to both of my seats. The bolts are about 3 bucks at the dealer. You may need to pull the seats to install them. If the spring is giving you trouble.

 

I cant get a pic of the bolt with out taking the seats out but if you follow this bracket down its connect with a small bolt and thats the one's i had to replace on both sides

 

There is a large t55 bolt for the pivot. Below that is the t45(iirc). Thats the one that will break.

 

mine was a VERY VERY small 10 or 8 mm that broke on both sides and the whole back fliped back

 

Weird how things change pending on where your truck was built.

Mines a torx. I can get pics this weekend once i get my digi cam back.

 

wow I'm gonna have to take a picture and show you guys what broke on mine. Its got to be a torx 10 or smaller. Maybe when I get around to doing this I'll make a quick write up on it.
