Mojave Road? Fall '09 or Spring '10?

So after checking out the numerous threads on ORR, about the Mojave Road, I want to do it.

The Mojave road is a 138 mile trek from the coloroado river to I think Barstow? A few guys here have done it, Jason rngprerunner has done it I know...

You drive miles and miles, camp wherever you end up, and the following morning you pack up and keep on goin...

Mojave Road - Dirtopia, the Off-Road Encyclopedia

It would have to be a Fall or Spring trip, Summer is just way too hot and Winter is cold as sh*t...

Who would be down to go? I want to do this, been wanting to do it for a while, and it's more fun with a larger group...

I've done it more times than I can count (ok, it's probably about 10, but that's still alot) and I still LOVE it. If there is anything you want to know about it just ask. I've got a bunch of different .gpx files too if anybody wants to check it out on Google Earth.

I'm in. Depending on date.

There is one water crossing in Afton Canyon that could be sketchy, but you could do it. We've had every type of vehicle you can think of do the trail with us from prerunners, to 4x4 trucks, to Jeeps, to 2wd trucks, to Unimogs, to brand new stock trucks... so yea, you can do it. You'll just have to take it slower than others.

I am so in on this trip! Ive been wanting to do this trail for the longest time. Ive even scouted it all out in a small plane. Flew the whole trail at less than 500 feet to scope everything out lol.

Count me in for sure on this trip! We need to get all the socal boys on this one...

Gotta be careful with that. There is a limit to vehicles/people on the MR. You can only have 7 vehicles or 14 people before you need to get a permit. And there are rangers out there that will cite you.

That said the last time I went we had over the limit, but under 14, so we split into two groups, a fast group and a slow group. Because of the layout of the trail and where the sites are we were never more than about 10 minutes apart, but still separated enough to be under the amount needed for a permit.

I would also suggest limiting it to a small group if there are going to be a bunch of first timers and stock or lightly modified rigs. It can be a long tough trail and having a lot of 'beginners' can make it even more difficult, even though the trail isn't all that hard by its self.

Nope. It's too long. The trail is out in the middle of no where, so you need to be able to make it 140+ miles on a tank of fuel.

And all vehicles that cross the Mojave National Preserve need to be licensed for the street, no OHV's are allowed.

We had a guy try and do it on a plated KTM a couple years ago and he made it about half way before we had to load the bike in a truck and haul it the rest of the way.

If its a road like it looks like, just get a 3+ gal tank and plate the bike. depending on engine size and the way you ride it could be done. I get around 120 miles on my 3 gal tank on my WR450 on trails which would be worse MPG than a road. or just throw in a 5 gal gas can into a truck and you are good to go assuming others dont mind hauling all your **** around.

It would be really close. But with someone carrying gas for you you can make it. The bigger issue is that it's a tough ride. You need to be a good rider in good shape with well maintained equipment to do it. That's part of why our KTM rider didn't make it. He ran out of energy, was using a lot of fuel, and then had a clutch cover gasket start to leak.

Quads and UTV's are a no go because of the registration thing. And trust me, its way more enjoyable in a truck!

Besides this trip? Nope, I've got no plans to run the trail any time soon. It's just too hot out there right now for it to be enjoyable. I would however like to get a night trip in sometime this summer. We did about 2-3 hours of the trail at night back in December and had a blast (same trip we finished it end to end in 5 hours). I'll let you know when/if we do it.

Best time to do the trail is fall and spring. Summer can be way too hot, 120+, and winter can be too wet (Soda lake becomes impassable) and cold (if camping (we saw temps down to the 30's during the day in December)).

If we get something going this fall I've got several guys that will go too.
