1998 Ranger Failed to Start
Hi from Kentucky. For the first time in 13 years my poor little truck failed to start. It recently had a tree top (8" in dia.) fall on it's passenger fender and windshield, both are d.o.a. After cleaning up the mess, I tried to start it, but it turned over but wouldn't fire up. I looked under the hood but couldn't see anything out of sorts, so I went to the computer, did a quick search and found your Ranger Forum.
I thought it could be the ECM that had failed due to the shock it had received, so I read everything in that category and ultimately anything electrical. Several posts referred to the fuel pump inertia switch, which is designed to open when involve in an accident, shutting off the pump. It hit home with me since the tree limb must have really bounced it hard. Sure enough that was it. I re-set the switch and it started as usual.
I just wanted to thank you guys for being here when I needed help. I had never heard of an inertia switch before and didn't know where to look for it. You guys made a quick fix out of this one. I will recommend this forum to everyone who has a Ranger. Thanks again.
