New guy needs help

I bought a 93 4x4 super cab 3.0 5spd a week ago and it is sluggish as hell. Not only that but i drive 24.4 miles one way to work and it takes about 3/8 of a tank to get there and back. so I have a 15 gallon tank and thats 58.8 miles on 3/8 of that. thats bad. I have been told that if i put factory tires on it that ill get 22-25 mpg. it has 32x11.50 15s on it. any ideas on this theory or did i buy a turd thats about to die?

The tire size does make a difference in mpg, you will get better mpg with the correct tire size.

Howdy. Swapping to stock tires will make a huge difference, but it sounds like you have some other problems too.

Tire size does have a negative affect on MPG..

Someone correct me if im wrong, but don't all extended cabs come with an 18Gal. tank??

If you like the look of the larger tire on the truck you could just re-gear the differentials.. say 4.56 or so.. that too would put the final drive ratio closer to the stock final ratio.. not to mention make the trans. a bit happier..

From what I hear the 3.0 is a good engine, a little lacking on power but still a good engine if its cared for properly..

I'd get it checked for Cel's as stated above... just for the peace of mind.

Your truck has a three inch lift on it as well,, It IMO won't look as good with stock tires on it..

I'd go for a re-gear. Thats what I'll be doing in the near future, run a 32X11.50 with a 4.0 and I've lost a bit of the pep and MPG it had when it was stock.

check out the brakes and such something could be a little off there..

my 96 always seemed to like it when I put new wheel bearings in..(lots of 4wheeling thew water).. good idea to at least go in and re pack them and check every thing is in proper order thew the entire drive line... TLC helps with MPG. too..

Oh God I know Im gonna get flamed for this, but what exactly are cels? I have only ever worked on RX-7s. And redoctober you are correct, it does have an 18 gal tank, I just wasnt filling it all the way. also, I didnt mention this before, but I live on a fairly steep hill and I have to turn around every time I drive it because it will not reverse out of my driveway unless its in 4 low. what a pain. Its the nicest, best maintained and largest vehicle Ive ever owned and its a damn turd. It even came with the factory owners manual and on page 1 it says warning: 3.0 becomes a turd if you put 32s on it. not really, but it should.

Billy there has to be something else wrong with the truck. I know there are a lot of people who run 32's and bigger with a 3.0 and there is no problem. The 3.0 is not the reason for your sluggish performance. I dont know what would be. Maybe a BL and 32's can affect a 93 but I highly doubt it. I say there is probably something slowing you down in the engine. There is a lot of members with great knowledge on this site so hopefully one of them will chime in and offer better advice than me.
