looking at rangers

hey guys, looking at used rangers. What is your opinion on 3.0L vs 4.0L? I've noticed 3.0L motors have been replaced on some trucks, and some 3.0L going 200k+ miles. Never noticed any 4.0L having any motor trouble. Also don't care for stepside due to lack of bed space. I like the edge for it's ride height, what is your opoins on that vs sport? also need extended cab for room, don't care if 2 or 4 door. Any opions appreciated

thanx
nathan

im on my second ranger with the 4L SOHC... also had an exploder with the 4L OHV. dont have any experience with the 3L

go with 4.0
gas mileage isnt terrible, and you can still pull stuff
500 gal of diesel, boats, broken-down toyota tundras... you know, all the things that need towing

4.0 SOHC that's a 2003 or above in order to stay away from the annoying timing chain rattle lol.

2004 edge, not sure about the motor, looked at it and decided i'd like the stepside bed, too small. Friend told me to get a trailer, he never uses his bed. Long story shorr, which 4.0l should i avoid and why?

01-02.5 4.0SOHC...timing chain problems but the problem is hit and miss...its also not unheard of in 03 and newer 4.0s but its less common

You can read the year of the motor off the driverside valve cover.

3.0 isn't a bad motor, bottom line if you find a truck you like that has the 3.0 give it a test drive and use that experience to determine whether or not you like how the motor performs.

4.0 has a timing chain. You wont have to worry about a belt snapping.
