Hello, and need advice

Hi, all

A friend of mine has a 1994 Ranger XLT V6 5speed that he's offered me for $400. A good price, but its gearbox is dead. It makes a noise like washers in a dryer so it certainly needs a transmission.

The transmission is not that old, but it must have been a bad recon job. However, the clutch is less than 10k old as it was done at the time of the last replacement.

The owner told me it also needs a new rear main seal, and i can tell from the smoke that one of the rocker cover gaskets is leaking oil on to the exhaust.

I think from looking online that the transmission replacement is not that hard as it can be done without removing the engine.

I guess I'm wondering if I might get in too deep on the thing and end up spending more than it'll be worth.

What is involved in the main seal replacement, can it be done with the engine still in the car?

Many thanks in advance.

Welcome! $400 doesn't sound like a bad deal... pick up a used transmission and put in the rear main while you're at it! You should be fine as long as you're able to do the work yourself.

Thanks,

I think the trans is within my capabilities, but if I have to take out the motor then I'll start to struggle. Not least because I don't have a hoist!

What's the procedure to change the main seal? Remove the oil pan, crank, flywheel, seal?
