Hi all you Ranger fans !!
I am new to this forum (all forums actually), so here goes.
I purchased my first new ranger in 1984, I picked it because it had a diesel engine and I am a diesel fan. I worked that Mazda diesel hard (pulled a trailor with 4,000lb on it)and put close to 300,000 km ( i'm Canadian ) on it. The engine finaly gave up so I got a bigger truck.
Then in 1987 I bought a Ranger with the 2.3 letre Mitsubishi turbo diesel. It had more power ( after I opened the pump up a bit ) but the aluminum head didn,t like the heat. I added a intercooler and that solved that prob. Eventualy it just got old and the body went bad, so I parked it in the barn.
Four years ago I was wining to my wife because I couldn't buy another new Ranger with a diesel in it and she got ticked off and said "why don't you build one!!" ( I have done a few conversions over the years ).
So..I bought a 1988 Ranger short box, stripped it down, sandblasted and painted the frame, new body panels where needed, made the front flip like a big truck, all new brakes, lines, steering gear, brake booster and cylinder, wheels and tires, and paint.
I totaly redid a 2.4 letre VW diesel (they designed and built for Volvo), added a tubo, intercooler, and installed it with the Volvo electric operated overdrive trans.
The interior is not complete but I'm work'n on it.
I have drove it for approx 5000 km, and it works great. I am geared a little low yet, but still get approx 40 mi/gal imp. It pulls about as strong as my wifes VW TDI.
Enjoy your Range,n around out there!!
