31" Coopers for the Trails!! :D

 

I wouldn't trust those trails. Who knows if the ground will cave in. :|

 

We will not be taking our trucks anywhere the ground is likely to open up.
There are lots of spots where that can happen, but we will be walking in those areas not driving.
Bring hiking or sturdy shoes and your camera. :D

And slayenem - I forget if you have 2WD or 4WD - a slightly more complete signature would help. :?
If you are 2WD you will not be able to go on even the light trails since there is wet grass and lots of loose gravel to cause you loss of traction.
Once you leave the aquifer known as Florida (possibly the flatest state) there will be hills to contend with.

John Griggs will have another thermal map of the area, so we can avoid the hot spots, and so he can climb into the hot spots...

 

Dan, my vote for the FR500s is because you're going to spend alot more time in the highway with Q and I than you are on trails in Centralia. I'm not going far off the beaten path and I doubt Q is either on his street radials, so don't think you'll be the odd man out if you can't off-road.

 

What does 2wd have to do with it, i take my truck places where no 2wd should go, but then agian am a nutter with a 4cyl. :partyman:

 

Do you have both sets mounted? Can you throw one set in the bed and do a swap in the parking lot? That could be fun..

You're kidding right? My truck is a 2WD 4 banger with an open rear diff and Goodyear Eagle GTIIs and grass and loose gravel are not a concern at all. Neither has ever stopped my truck. The only thing that has was some soft, deep mud on a badly rutted trail. As long as you maintain momentum, a 2WD will do fine. My truck is often times the muddiest vehicle in the parking lot at school...and there are a lot of Jeeps where I live.

I say just bring two 31" tires for the rear at the least, or all 4 if you can fit it into your bed. At least then you have the option to do some light to mild off-roading... Oh yeah, bring a tow strap.

Afraid of getting stuck? Afraid of having to tow somebody out and push is more like it. How many 4X2 trucks did YOU have to push last time in Centralia? Ask Neil about Mike's 4X2 encounters...lol, and pushing Jon out of a parking space....lol

I GOT STUCK in Centralia, with my 01 Supercab 4.0, 4X4, 4.10 EDGE.

Being prepared, is not being afraid. Centralia might as well be another country, you'll get no help from anybody there, except us.

 

Maybe not, this time you'll have a genuine local with connections.

Guys got stuck in the parking lot - WERE YOU THERE??
I do not want to start a flame war here, but....
People are asking advice and I think that best comes from experiance - have you driven the trails around Centralia?
This is not an opinon post on 2WD versus 4WD!!
We are going to be starting and stopping on hills and in rough terrain - this is not a race through the woods.
If anyone gets stuck there will be plenty of help.

I agree with LILBLUE04FX4L2. We're not talking about loose gravel. We're talking about big rocks, sinkholes, terrain most people would never see. Centralia IS a world of its own. The ground underneath you could cave in at any second. I think it was Daddy Griggs who had a 2WD ranger, and he got stuck, it took a while to free him, and I'm pretty sure he was raised and he had some nice offroad tires too.

I'd definitely agree with Wowak. If you have both sets, come up on the street tires, then we'll help you switch them in the parking lot. Then we'll help switch back to street for on your way home. Personally, I'd never go offroading in Centralia. Being an engineering student and understanding mechanics of soils, I honestly get nervous just walking around in certain spots.

Neil is right guys. Be prepared. And remember half of the fun of off roading is getting stuck so we all have stories to talk about. I will not be there but would like to see alot of pics posted to see how things went.

 

Yeah, speaking of that, who will definitely be bringing a set of tow straps? I have a crappy old tow-rope at home in PA but I don't know if I trust it to pull out a stuck truck.

 

I have a procomp 20000x30ft
and a walmart 10000x20ft
also have 3 shackles..
and the piece that goes into the trailer hitch...

Last time I pulled swoop, scott and a couple others.

I am sure there will be at least 10+ tow straps there

Oh and i pulled jaysontheedge out.. of his stuck in the parking lot.. (he had revos btw but 2wd)

Nova, the ground where we offroad isnt going to collapse. and we dont offroad where it might collapse.

I am bringing a friend so I no longer have a seat open in the truck
but I will happily and CAREFULLY "Unstuck" anyone.
That being said 2wd wont be doing the majority of the trails.
Having unpowered front tires means you would get stuck almost every time you stop.. and you cant control momentum when you are in the middle of a 10 truck convoy.
