Had to mod the ignition switch cover (added pic w/ key)

The Fusion key w/ RKE didn't fit in the cover to the ignition switch so I popped the cover off, took my Dremel out, cut off the wings, sanded and then painted it.

It does look better in person so maybe it will grow on me. Right now though, I'm not sure I'm liking it, what do you all think.

I was asked for a pic w/ the key but forgot about it. Here it is.

Looks kinda weird, but it is probably cause I am not use to seeing it like that. What's the Fusion key look like and do differently than out stock keys?

The only kicker.. the wings are usually used to twist the ignition on... I'm almost afraid you might accidently break a key off in there.. that would suck!

Yep, Bob made a post this week about a lot of the Explorer guys using them.

I'll get a pic w/ the key in the ignition once the paint is completely dry - I've already messed it up twice by being impatient.

There have been no issues thus far w/ the Pats or the RKE. It works great. I will say that I do have my reservations w/ the size of it, it's quite bulky. Like the looks of the switch cover, I'm sure I'll get used to it.

The Fusion/Edge/Etc/Etc don't have wings on the ignition switch so I'm pretty sure there won't be a problem w/ the new key or either of my original Ranger keys in regards to breakage. It was kinda weird turning the key the first few times though.

Fx4wannabe01: I'm curious, why wouldn't this work w/ the manny trans?

There is a button that you have to press to be able to turn the key all the way to the release point. I don't think that will be a problem though. He might have a different reason.

Manuals have that little "finger" or "tab" that you gotta push forward while turning back on the ignition.....i use that plastic "cup" or whatever to help the ign back to get my key out. It might just be the way I do it that would make it hard for me. lol.....i'm sure it's no biggie. Wish I could do this mod....but i have NO POWER NOTHING! lol. Neato mod!

How did you pry the cover off? I have the new key and want to try this, but I don't want to break the ignition switch... does it just pry off with a screw driver and then slip back on?

I used two small screw drivers the first couple times I took the cover off. I pried from the top and side at the same time. It will pop right off the switch. Put a cloth or something over the end of the screw drivers so you don't scratch the trim if you want.

I got the key cut this morning, and I programmed the Key and remote with no trouble! Now I just have to mod the igntion cap like you did. The people at the local dealership said it would never work because it uses a different chip... I assured them that it had already been done, but they just shook their heads like I was crazy! Thanks for the help!

My mom broke her key off in the ignition once. Called a locksmith, ripped the whole stearing column apart to get the key out, and then had to modify the cylinder to get a new key to work. In the end, we ended up with 1 master key. and made a duplicate.... this came to biite ME in the *** when I bought car from mom about 5yrs later, took it to the dealer for some recall, and THEY lost the key! Then, THEY had the ***** to b!tch at me about how their master key would not work in that car...

2 days later they found the key for it.... So much for telling them to NOT lose the key...
