Painting Step Bars

Painting Step Bars
I have the OEM oval shaped black step bars on my truck. Could I sand all the paint off and replace the paint with the kind of stuff like the line-x bedliner? I think it would help with the prevention of chipping and cracking.
Has anybody done anything like this? And if so, what were your results?

I used Rustoleum's Spray-on Bed Liner on mine. They looked pretty good with a nice texture-finer than Line-X. It also helps to hide a lot of imperfections that you might have due to sanding the original paint.
Running them thru the winter killed them tho, so I just took them off. In spite of that, I was really happy with how they came out.

Ok man, thanks for the input! I was just wondering about how the paint would stick on there after stripping all the old junk off.
Down here in TN, our winter's are nothing like the ones up there where you are. I think I should be fine. But how did running them through winter kill them? Did the paint not hold up well?
I was mainly going to paint them b/c they are scuffed and chipping so I thought something like the line-x paint would help prevent that.

I did something similar with my Westin safari bar. I sandblasted it and then painted it with Duplicolor bedliner in an aerosol can. It's held up fine so far this winter here, so you shouldn't have a problem there! Best part is that if you scrape them on something, you can just give it another shot with the can and you can barely see it at all.
