other engines put in a ranger

other than ranger and expo and mustang and thunderbird motors, what other ford/lincoln/mercury engines can be transplanted? i want more power, but i need something that would be common and cheap to swap in

sbc and sbf are small block chevy and ford respectively

small block ford, 302, 351 or you could try and shoehorn a 300 in there. they can be built up pretty good.

small block chevy, 305, 350. but that is cross breedin and that is wrong.

how well does a 3.8 stang v6 work in our trucks ?
there is one for sale locally for $250.0 with trans and wiring harness. about 40k on the entire thing.

will I see an increase or decrease in mpg, and would I see a moderate enough gains by using it ?

be a huge pain because the motor is wide with not much to show unless you went s/c. 300 4.9l really doesnt fit b/c the motor is stupid long, most aftermarket support to make it as bolt in as possible is the 302. but if i could throw one in try to squeeze a intech under there

i think a 4.2 V6 found in 98-up F-150's would be cool. its got a little more power then a 4.0 SOHC and i think it gets about the same fuel mileage. probably easier then a 4.6, but if you got the M5R2 and all the drivetrain parts anyways...

If you're serious a swap for more power, look to the turbo 2.3L. Not exactly the most original idea from a forum perspective, but driving around it isn't very likely you will see another one. Also note that the Ford 2.3T has almost no notoriety or street cred to speak of, so its sleeper potential is EPIC in the real world. Few things in this world are funnier than saying "Hey, I bet I can beat that with my 4-cylinder Ranger" and then winning. When you win you will get screaming, crying, laughing, LOADS of BS excuses about why you won, another driver's complete loss of all dignity, and best of all are the WTF stares. The fun you can have with a turbo 4-banger Ranger is endless.

My opinion may be slightly biased because I own one, but of any vehicle I have ever owned this thing brings more "WTF factor" than anything else. And this is coming from a guy who had such vehicles as a low 11-second Harley ironhead (you don't know a sleeper bike until you have a Harley that hangs with crotch rockets).
