Headache rack

My friend had a headache rack on his toyota before he decided to put a flat bed on it. It fit on the ranger so he let me take it and see how I like it. Im not entirely sold on it yet and want to see what you guys think. The plan would be to mount 4 or 5 lights on top with 2 floods facing backward and then get an in bed tool box to hold all of my stuff.

Best Before shot I have

After

I like it! I have a STK Pro Rack in the back of my Ranger. Gives me more tie down points for loads. I like your Ranger!

I think im going to keep it for a while but its annoying that my tool box has to sit in my bed until i get a replacement. Can anybody direct me to a thread about a guy who built a fold down light bar?

it is different and looks good.

Why can’t you use the box you have; too wide ?

Maybe a steppie box and add some extensions to the side if needed ?

Yeah its too wide because of the mounting brackets for the rack. If i put it where it fits then there is a big gap between the tool box and rack and it looked really dumb. Im tired of having a over the rail box but need the biggest box I can get because I carry so much crap in it.

I got a “In-Bed Chest" from these guys, they have a few different sizes.

I didn’t get one that has the top notch to allow the top to open without interference from the rack, wish I had now.

IF/When you order make to to get the 0.120” (close to ⅛”) wall thickness, there standard box is only 0.055” (less than 1/16”). They mention in their ad wall thickness of 0.055”, so be careful.

From what I have seen in my Chest (wall is 0.120” - ordered it that way), their welding is good, the top has a good seal and the latch sounds solid.
I would buy from them again if I needed another box.

For what it is worth I like the look of the Back Rack you have, did your friend make it ?
It appears to be bent perfectly on both side.

From the pictures it looks like the bed mounts are not tight to the sides; is there any room for modifying the mounting to get the bed mounts tighter ?

These are the only pictures I can find of my truck with the box in the bed, funny, I was trying the Pro Tech Rack on to see if I liked it !
Sold the Pro Tech Rack and kept the Back Rack which is almost ready to remount to the truck.

What brand of chest is it?
He bought it used and had it sandblasted and power coated. Im not sure what it was initally for.
As for tighter to the sides do you mean like secured down to the top of the bed rail? It hanges of the side of the bed rail slightly so it could be that giving off the impression it isnt tight. But I also only used 3 sheet metal screws on each side to fasten it down with for now. Since im going to keep it i need to drill holes and put the bolts on it.

Make something custom.

Measure twice, cut, grind, weld, grind, repeat.

Repeat. Repeat again.

Satisfaction.

Can’t remember the brand but I got it from these guys:

OK on the used thing.
Ya the fitment looks loose on the side, like it isn’t wide enough to secure to the top.
Just wondering, some modification needed ?
Was thinking the steppie version of a bed rail box might work but not too sure; you would need some plate extended from the sides but I think a Chest inside of the bed would give you more room.

ADDED:

Don’t forget what I said above about the wall thickness, the 0.055” wall is just short of paper thin and may dent with just dropping a tool.
