Not that long ago my son who is 10 asked me what the longest highway was. I told him which one was the longest in Canada, he then asked what was longest in the world.

Honestly I had to look, as it turns out it is the Pan-American Highway, the original runs from Fairbanks to Buenos Aires in Brazil.

Since he asked these questions, I have not been able to get the thought of driving this stretch of road all 48000 KM's with him.

Teams have driven this and set world records. I have never heard of anyone driving it outside of a team.

What kind of things would you take into consideration to plan and make this trip?

Any thoughts ?

If you fly to Brazil and buy a 4 door diesel ranger then drive that back you will be god to a lot of people. That may be a better plan.

 

This is really hard to drive till this highway ends ! Must have some camps some food and other things like fuel expensive to drive at that ! But this is only a good idea :) thanks for sharing.

I read a short story on a guy doing this with a motorcycle. This was about 10 years ago, but I remember that parts of the road between Panama and the Andes are basically not there and required some major bushwacking. Trip would be sick though, and bringing back a diesel Ranger would be the cherry on top!

 

I really wouldn't do it because driving threw Mexico would be dangerous right now! There is a lot going on down there so why take the chance ?

 

sounds like a treck. id have a built truck. aux cooling, cb radio, ham radio, gps, short wave, sat phone, 35's, lockers front and rear.. you get my drift.

also, the highway is actually 26,750 kms.

Drive there sell your truck and buy 4 diesel ranger with 5 sp and then return.

Small truck down there bring a good price.

 

I'd bring some firepower and a few good friends that know how to use their guns... Mexico is a really crappy place to be in right now.

And install some armor and stuff onto your truck.


Better yet, just get a Ranger from Brazil and drive that back. If you can temporarily make it look crappy for the drive through Mexico (along with wearing shabby clothes and such to reduce the "I have money" appearance, you should be okay. Maybe bring a few cans of Plasti-dip to make the truck look like it was spray bombed in random areas, and that the paint job is ruined? Then peel it off when you get home. Mismatched tires on ugly wheels would help even more...

Hi, Takes for all of the Ideas and advise it was much appreciated. Based on the latest information I have uncovered this is not going to happen anytime soon. Cars and tourist are being flagged at the border in Mexico I was reading, that and something called the Darien Gap no four wheeled vehicle has made it since the 60's when some European prince did it, a cargo vessel is now required to either Peru, Ecuador, and or Colombia. Each country requires an international driver's permit, Brazil requires a visa, and each country requires its own insurance carrier. While this is a monster of an adventure, and may still be planned and implemented I have a new idea that was created from this one.
The furthest point North to the most southern tip of North America! Dead Horse Alaska to Key Largo in Florida roughly 5800 Miles and all the twists and turns and sites to see on the way.

Any suggestions on places to see and or stop at?
