Auto Daylight Dimming headlight lenses

This idea came to me while waiting at a light and seeing a F150 with blacked out headlighhts. Add to the fact dad is getting new glasses in the next cpl of weeks, got me thinking. now, the cost vs performance ratio is way off, however, I think if those involved got into this area, it wouldnt be quite expensive. Maybe Christian can chime in since he is an optician(sp)

now, wtf am i talking about?!

ok, on glasses, the kind you wear, not drink from, u can get a coating where they will darken by themselves in the sunlight. now i think this is just a coating, which means, this coating cant possibly be as much as the eye places claim. if you were to put that same coating on the lense of a headlight, - think a black truck - and drove it outside during the day, the headlight lesne would go dark all by itself, yet at night, it would turn clear, again, by itself, hence killing off any legallities of having covers over the headlights, AND during the day it would make the truck look better, yet not hinder the light output at night.

personally, i think this is an awsome idea, but considering they charge some outrageous price of $60 for like 3inches to be coated, two headlights would be a second mortgage.

I don't think this idea would work due to the fact, at night when you turn on your headlights, they will want to darken because of the light.......

I guess the question would be what type of light causes transitions lenses to darken, if it is something like UVA or UVB that headlights don't produce it could possibly work.

Halogen lights emit some UV, whether it's UVA or UVB I don't know. I just know they emit UV light.

FWIW, I keep reptiles, and some of my diurnal species need UVA/UVB. That's how I know halogen emits UV.
