wondering if anyone has put one of those electronic, auto-dim rear view mirrors into one of our trucks... and maybe even one with an e-compass? i'm thinking of one out of the sport tracs, shouldn't be hard to find one at a wrecker...

something like this?

I wonder how hard it is to install one of these. I might have to pick one up from one of the hundreds of Taurus's at the JY

A lot of guys put the ones from the Expos in the rangers. I had one in mine, its really easy to wire up if you already have a OHC. Only like 3 more wires and it works awesome

The dim feature is built into the mirror, you just need a power, ground and reverse wire to make it work.

power and ground, that's pretty obvious, but what do you mean by reverse wire?

did ford make any of these mirrors with compasses or temp gauges on them?

i don't want to put the OHC in mine right now

It just turns off the auto-dim when you shift into reverse so you can see behind you. I don't think Ford made a OEM one with compass or temp in it, I know there are aftermarket ones you can get from the dealer though.

this install is SO easy with an OHC..if you dont have an OHC it makes it a lot harder..then you can get your temp and direction from the OHC..

like Trent said its 3 wires to add the mirror once you have the OHC..without it.its like 10 I think...also if I remember correctly I had to wire in two relays also. They jumped to each other tho and one wire ran off for the dimmer or something like that..

i can't understand why there would need to be that many wires... i'll go look into buying the one from the dealer ship... but it will probably be a while, i won't see my truck for a week or 2...

Here we go, the 2 relays were for the auto-headlights, not the auto dim.

auto dim is easy..hard part is the headlight part..tapping into those wires that you have no room to do such..

id just do the overhead console swap also..thats an easy install..

I wouldnt go to the dealer for one unless you wanna spend a few hundred..then gotta pay for the harness too im sure they dont come together.

I got mine with harness and two relays from Jones for like 30 shipped..

a guy that had one laying around..you can find them on ebay and other ranger sites..just gotta wait until you see one..junkyards have them too..

OHC -- over head console..console harness, temp sensor its not a big install just a big wiring install and people are afraid to do it since you have to cut a hole in your headliner but its easy..just start small and keep cutting it out until it fits..

Console has dome light, map light, compass, temp and a storage spot for a garage door opener or just general storage. The mirror from the dealer is 200-250, might be more for both temp and compass. I got all my stuff for under 50 bucks, OHC and mirror.

I have the stock explorer mirror in mine and I don't know how I drove without it. I did mine when I put in the OHC and lighted visors. All 3 of them use the same harness. I never hooked up the reverse wire because I never use my rear view mirror to back up.

Compass is built into the unit, the temp sensor gets mounted on the front of the truck. 2 wires from from it to the OHC. I have pictures but they're on another computer, I'll find them later if someone else doesn't post them up.

Do it, they're sweet. I got my '09 with one installed at the stealership, compass and thermometer. Looks to be maybe 3 wires going into it, but they're small and hard to see without disassembly. I don't think mine loses the auto-dim in reverse, but I just may not have noticed it. LR
