Royal Purple HPS 10w40 in high mileage 2002 4.0 SOHC question

As the title states, i have a 2002 4.0 with 230k on it. I was talking with a maintenance guy at work about doing an oil change, and he gave me 5 qts. of Royal Purple HPS 10w40 to try out. He is the mechanic that works on our Kubota buggies. I was wondering what are yalls thoughts on using it? Has anyone here used it before? Any pros or cons of using it? Im not sure if geographical location makes a difference, but i live in south Georgia. Our winters are not as particularly cold as the north.

Thoughts??

10w40 whatever brand is notably thicker (both cold start & running hot) than the 5w30 spec in your manual & on the OilCap.
Does your mechanic know the history of the OilPressurized TimingTenioners in these V6~4.0L~SOHC engines?
Before putting in thicker oil, you should really re-consider, unless you like to gamble unnecessarily with your vehicle.
Do some googling on manufacturers specs for various oil weights.
Personally use 0w30~FullSyn summer, 0w20~FullSyn winter in my V6~4.0L~SOHC at 9000ft colder climate.
The 0 prefix indicates that it's immediately available at cold start to flow to those notorious Tensioners.
If you've got an oil leak, thinner oil leaks faster, thicker oil leaks slower, basic fluid dynamics; fix the leak either way.
Hope this helps.

Yes, don't use it. Send it to me, I will find a use for it. My 02 has 255K miles on it and have been blending 10W-40 with 10W-30 to bump up the viscosity a little. I feel the wear on the bearings could use a little higher viscosity oil to maintain oil pressure. Yes, it would be better for the Cam Timing Cain Tensioners to have thinner oil but if the oil pressure is lower, the tensioners would pump up slower anyway.

I recently installed a Melling high volume oil pump and may go back to using lower viscosity oil, but I also found a 5W-40 oil that is tempting. It states for foreign vehicles but should work in our engines too.

I also recently did a complete Cam Timing Chain Cassette rebuild and everything but the mechanical crankshaft/jackshaft tensioner was in good condition. So, using the higher viscosity oil didn't cause any damage to the Cam Timing Chain System. The hydraulic Cam Timing Chain Tensioners were replaced at around 100K miles but that means they still had 150K miles on them.

I actually prefer to run 5w30 as that is what the truck has been running religiously before i bought it. The mechanic at work isnt my mechanic persay. Just a topic that came up betweenbus, and he had some, well a lot, laying around and offered it to me. I thought it might be on the thick/heavy side, but was more curious than anything about how many may or may not have used it.

I wish some of you guys lived closer, as i would definitely gift them to you. Lol.

I will continue as planned and change the oil with more 5w30. Searching this site has opened my eyes to sticking with that, and using Motorcraft filters. Seems that a never ending debate can spawn about those topics once mentioned. Lol.

Thanks for the replies, guys. This really is a great site and community.
