Summer DD cycle project

well i finally got a motorcycle. picked up a yamaha 550 maxim for $200. Going to use it to get to work, gym, and other errands when its nice out. Should be nice and cheap on gas. I'm in the process of getting the wiring back on it and doing some custom **** along the way. still need a battery, seat, make some new un-gay bars, and finish some body work and paint. also change the exhaust a little and chop the front fender shorter

here is how is was stock,

when i got it it had a rad lame paint chop and too much chrome

Size: 150.7 KB

And how it is now without a seat and the air filter pods. still deciding on what kind of seat and if i want to convert to hardtail. also threw on some flat black, need to fill some holes still though. also need to gut the mufflers.

i'll keep this updated as more gets done. its my new winter project but i may be done before winter since its been fun working on it

Wow that looks almost identical to the Xj650 I went and picked up last night for my roomate. Now me and all my roomates have 82 XJ650's. I need to start working on mine again.

nice bike, great price! just make it a bobber project, you've already flat blacked it, throw on a simple seat and go

Did a little more work and picked up some parts i needed.
I got my air filter pods, battery and i got a seat. I also got all the wiring connected to the right places i think. Still need to hide it all, but it wasnt too bad just needed to match up all the connecters etc. But it started out as a great rats nest.

filters

I'd ditch the whole rear footpegs and brackets, the little mini highway bars, the front fender, and those factory gauges.

Looks a lot better tho

Oh, there were too many pictures that distracted me from reading lol. They sell pillion pads that stick on by like 6 suction cups so you don't have to mess up your fender, when we had our Harley store opened we sold a million of them. My dad uses one on his bike too for my mom, they don't move around at all either. Let me check my living room, there might still be some of them sitting here.

my pile of stock parts is growing

built some new bars. just made a quick design and i like it. maybe make another set or two a little different with the extra 8' of 7/8"

the rest of the pics are how it sits now and a simple mock-up of my seat. which i may swap with on of the simple black vinyl ones, might go better with my bikes style.

Man that thing looks great! Only thing I could see being changed. Is I think the forks and front wheel need to come out just a little farther from the frame at more of an angle. Looks BA though!

i think you need to purchase or make a set of "Z" bars for it and itll be complete. what are you running for a stoplight or license plate holder?

Rake would mean pulling the whole front end apart cutting the mount welded to the frame holding the tree in place and than cutting some frame off to make the rake. Defiantly NOT an easy thing to do.
That's almost like a cafe racer style.

Looks Great!, I have allways loved that style of bike.

I got a 1985 or 86 Honda Magna with the 700 V4. Id like to do something similar to what you have but the motor layout makes it hard.
