I know this isn't as big and fancy as some of yalls projects, but I was asked to take pictures as I went so here they are.


I got the idea to mold my CB into the spot where my ac controls are form this picture...

but after thinking about it I decided I'd put it in my Expo console instead.

I started tonight by doing a little measuring and then some cutting with the Dremel tool.

I then needed to some how keep the CB in the hole so I cut some 2x2 down at an angle mounted it to the bottom of the CB...

Then ran a screw through each side of it to keep it where I wanted it:

Then after it was set in place I started the Bondo:
First coat:

I went with Bondo instead of fiberglass, because it's a lot easier to get around here. This is my first time ever using it too. I know it doesn't look pretty yet, but give it a few days and it'll look good. That's it for tonight.

Here's a curious question: how easily will it be to remove the cb and tape from the bondo? (btw, ive never worked w/ bondo so i dont know and i know you said you havent..) What are your plans for the speaker? lengthen the wires?

I have no idea how easy it'll be to remove the Bondo & tape. I am guessing it won't be much fun. I think I'll end up using a dremel tool to get it off aroud the base of the CB. As for the speaker, i will be getting a small external speaker and mount it somewhere.

last time I was at Radio Shack the had a small 1"x1" that I am wanting to get, i hope they still have it.


As of now I have sanded the second coat of primer and applied the Bondo Putty. I hope to sad it and may be get a coat of primer on it today, but Sunday's are always really busy for me.

 

OK today I added bondo putty to smooth things out a bit, much easier to work with. The dark pink stuff is the putty, Then I sanded the crap out of it.

The parts sanded/scuffed to be painted:

The dark spots are just where the paint is a little heavy. Two more coats of primer and then paint. Woowho!

 

Tape wasn't to terrible to remove, I used a razor blade and a dremel tool. As for the CB, I have no need for it to come out.

Looks really good, you'll have a great spot under the CB for switches or gauges or something else.

 

Actually the wood is just below the Bondo so it'll have to stay as a big blank spot, but I did think of that... after the fact.

 

I bet you could rig something up, you could make a little bracket that holds the CB there instead of having the wood pieces there. Never give up! haha

EDIT: Just thought about it and I doubt you can take the wood out now, with the Bondo there.

I already miss my cup holders and it's only been one day.

i would have done some research 1st, because all that bondo on there will never look right... if it was mine i would have just used fiberglass.. laid it across the front, and then bondo'd over that...

Lookin good. Are you gonna sand it some and smooth out the rest before you finish primering and painting?

did you fill the voids with anything before putting the bondo down?
if it is too thick it will crack over time with flexing and heat/moisture.

i would personally sand it a little bit smoother myself... but the concept is cool and i think i will be stealing the idea pretty soon

 

I did fill the voids before I bondo'd it.

I sanded it as much as I am going to, the edges look kinda cruddy , but they'll be covered up. I didn't sand it completely smooth because my cup holder and the trim that goes around the CB aren't completely smooth, so I left some texture.

I needed to get the console out so, but I had to take one of the seats out to get it out. So I figured while I'm at it I'll go ahead and take the other one out and clean the floor real good.

I have to figure out where to remount my airbag switch. Where I had it was blocking my floor defrost vents, which wasn't a problem when I lived in FL.

I cut a piece of metal out of the console to make room for the external speaker. It would have been between my fingers.

I had to remove the plastic piece below the coin holder to make room for the speaker and then needed a new barrier in the storage compartment so I notched, fabbed, and attached it in there. It's the piece with the white rectangle sticker on it.

lookin good. not trying to stray too far off topic but hows the Visonic combo work? I installed one in a friends car a year ago when it was a seperate speaker and amp combo and it was kinda umm...quiet. Are they any better now? Im guessing its been redone since that type with the amp mounted on the box is all i see anymore.

 

I had my subs how yours is... and once i removed the seat, and made a mount for it to bolt down where the seat bolted down its 10x louder... and sounds alot better..

I like it, sounds pretty good to me. Sounds like I should have paid more for it.


On Wed. I picked up the Cobra speaker I ordered, brought it home and the dang thing was to big, so I had to go back to Radio Shack and get their brand speaker same price, 10 watts less, & less toys, Oh well. Any way, it's mounted.

Never knew what this spot was for or used it, so I figured it would be a good spot for the speaker. It was a very tight fit, no room to play at all. I had to cut some metal and plastic out to make it work.

Thursday I put the console(less some of the parts I painted) & seats back in and ran all the wires, but for some reason my sub isn't working again probably just a lose connection somewhere.
