My 1991 F-150 project...

Well long story short... I have a 1991 F150 Lariat. I had a urge to find something else to hual wood in. I can't stand burning gas and piling wood in the Edge. Anyway, my brother has been looking for me as well. He calls and tells me there is a 1994 extended cab f150XL longbed with a 4.9 auto, 4x4 (oh, and green) about a hour south of me.
So I jumped in the ranger went down south... I drove up and down this rd looking for this green extended cab. Soon there was a older gentleman that appeared out by the roadway and wanted to know if I was the guy looking for the truck. I said I was and pointed it out. (histiry lesson) after my brother broke his back and had several vertabrae fused together... I would say he has not totally been right...

The truck I found was a RED AND WHITE two tone F150 XLT lariat, Standard cab, Long bed, 4.9L, 5 speed, 4x4 (stick on the floor). What I actually wanted. The extended cab would have been nice, but I always thought they looked gay... Anyway, 600.00 some laughs about both our brothers (that know each other) and I am on my way home.

Now, this truck was 600.00... Front tank leaks. Speed cable broke on the way home, about 4 miles from the guys house (he had told me it had been sitting but come on), Key switch did not want to work right. lots of rust and rusty spots and parts (originated out of Cleveland, home of the salt mines I think ) The kicker to all this.... 68,200 original miles!

I have already started to work on it a little here and there. Fixed a couple of things I had that the Bronco doned over to it.... and the fun begins...
Already done....
New hood latch cable. New doors with power options (however the plugs do not match the wiring diagrams so there is going to be some fun there). Newer wheels and tires nothing crazy (yet, just 30x9.5x15 on stock polished 1993 wheels). New PB 6.5 speakers for the newer doors. My kenwood head unit will have to work, My better sirus headunit is not liking this truck... everytime I plug it in, it blows the fuse? Going to have to paint some door panels to match the interior (thought about doing some buckeye colors and changed my mind)... Straight red will work...
Picked up a new Fender and Hood... $80 bones I love this truck....Might go back and get the other fender for smiles and grins... he offered it to me for $20 more dollars but did not take it with me when I went... (truck came from TX where there is none of that salt crapola, he got it for the bed and it is nice... however he could not be coaxed into selling it). New Chrome bumper waiting in the wings... and the guy the hood and fender came from is going to build a wincher bumper for the front for the price of materials man it's nice to make new friends.
Pics to come... Took them this weekend....

Will do as soon as I get them downloaded. Fiance will ahve to do it. Truthfully, I can't wait... I hate abusing my ranger by hauling wood in it. We cut 7 cord this weekend... Not sure but thought I over loaded on one load and poped a weld on the bed...

This F150 should be a sweet work truck. The 300 six was a work horse anyway... and the 5spd and low gears it has should make it nice. Won't be big on mileage but that is O.K. It has dual tanks

Actually, Yes. I do plan on towing a trailer with it? Never knew they had a problem....
As for the club. I have recieved more info over here on it than over at the F150 forums. Unreal....
I do have one question for you though... maybe you can help. I am having issues turning in 4 wheel. I am on grass that was damp not wet.... not hard pack dirt ( I would expect it there)... I gpt some chime walk this weekend, with a audable report back in the cab... No popping or anything just a soft click...Would have never heard it if I would have had the stereo on? straight line is fine, just turning... I was thinking a bearing but it does it both directions...

No, no flatbed for me. I am not a flatbed person. AT ALL. I think that just takes away from a truck. Dually I guess is fine. But not a 1/2 ton.
I am was planning on doing some type of lift to it. But after using it this weekend to hual wood. I might just redue it to original and leave it.
I had enough wood on it this weekend, it would have made two good loads with the ranger. It was all sasaphrase and poplar so nothing overly heavy... I was happy though. One trip...

Well for a little update. Pics are coming...
All four shocks/struts made it on this weekend. Had to be doen reguardless of what I do later. Damn thing felt like it was riding on springs alone. Two on front were actually cake. Two on back were a different story.
*QUESTION - Why am I hearing so much clicking in the rear springs... Hualed a load of wood yesterday and on the way home the springs were clicking when I would hit a bump or a rock in the road.

Next, I started to put the radio in, but due to the door change it is becoming more of a pain in the **** than expected. It's a 1991 and the doors are from a 1993. The plugs match up but the wires are different... nothing is working.

Anyone know where to get a break down of fords color chart?
Like what is speaker wires, what is power door lock wires?

The 4.9 is a work horse and the 5 speed mazda will do fine. I used to haul cattle with mine until it ended up lifted. Oh and extended cabs are not gay. Atleast mine isn't.

My Brother is a "BIG" ford nut... Has all kinds of F250's and 350's come and go. He was calling it a "chime" walk. He said it was a common mistake that people make when they tear the front ends apart thinking there is something wrong... When in reality the clicking is just the front end getting bound... He said if it was not doing it all the time, i.e. straight line, and there was not fluid or wear showing, not to worry about it.

The "Chime" is a click heard in the front end (who knows where) when in 4WD it clicks when turning. He stated it was becuase I was on hard packed or on pavement. Which for the most part he was right. When I got off the dirt into the dew covered grass it quit. I was just nervous there was something else wrong.

Man the rear-end is rusty... But I dont see any broken springs. The shackles look O.K. Maybe I am missing something.

IMHO the early body styles that have the bar through the rear extended window just look goofy. I like the others 92-96 with the open widow. Again, IMO....

O.K. hit rock bottom last night... Front tank started leaking...

"F" I can only run 1/2 tank in each now. Making it a real pain in the az. Trying to get the rear bumper off and noticed it dripping. Which really P.O. me when I needed to break the torch and the grinder out to get the rear bumper off.

Just lovely... Need to find a good clean 1992 to a 1996 and just do a complete swap out of the body and bed. keep my frame and drivetrain...

Pics still coming. Will be changing the drivers fender and wheel well and hood soon. The new shocks and struts are on (if I did not already say that).

Been racking my brains... Had a vacum leak that I could not find. Effected everthing! Start the truck jumped straight into a super high idle. Run the truck, seemed like it had no ***** and super crazy highway gears - just took too much to get it moving.
Some investigative work and a old armor all bottle full of suds. I sprayed everthing... No leaks?
I hunted, listened and looked a entire day... It sat and ran in place so long it developed a rad hose leak... figures but not what I was looking for.

Finally. I walked out and looked at the donor Bronco. walked back in and starred at the F150... Low abnd behold. A breather tube that feeds some funky little block on the firewall was broke. Still in position, but I had never spayed it. One squirt and presto. Bubbles everywhere. Swapped out the block from the Bronco and everything is good. Truck is up and running good!
Definately has more power and drives a lot better now! Can lag it and it wont die on ya.
Hauled two loads of wood this weekend with it.... Nice!
It's amazing how much more confident you feel when the vehicle is running correctly!
