Sticks - 03 Edge Build.

Some of you may know me, most of you probably don't. I love to lurk, and have mainly used this forum for tech.

But now I feel it's time to contribute a little through my truck, so here we go.

2003 Ford Ranger Edge Supercab 4Dr
-3.0 V6
-USED to be an automatic, but now rocks an M5OD
-8.8 w/4.10's

Plenty of things have been done to this truck since I bought it in 2003. The short list is:

-4" lift via Spindles and Bastard Leaves
-33's
-15x10 Cragar Soft 8's
-Code "1" torsion bars
-20% tint
-Headlight Mod
-Cargo Light mod
-Explorer Sport seats
-Shorty console
-06+ Mirrors
-Grabber Blue Edge decals
-Factory step bars
-Etc.

But the single handed most important mod I did to this truck was ditching the automatic that I blew sky high for an M5OD manual. I went for the "OEM" style swap, so everything is as if the truck originally had a manual. EVERYTHING that had anything to do with the automatic is gone. I even wired in the clutch safety switch, and swapped engine/trans wiring harnesses. Special thanks to Shane, Stone, and Trey, for all of their direct and indirect help with the swap.

So here's my truck at the beginning, and now:

2010:

2014:

And just for fun, some automatic trans carnage:

All of which was remedied with:

So now that pretty much brings us to present day.

By now you probably realize that my truck is two wheel drive. Well, I'm tired of 4x2, so it's 4x4 swap time.

Picked this stuff up today from a Sport Trac.

Over the next few weeks I'll be collecting parts for the swap. I'm fairly certain I'll be doing the swap in a two part manner. Front axle, knuckles, CV's, rotors and bearing assemblies first, and then transmission and transfer case later. I just did the M5OD swap in March, and am not looking forward to pulling that trans again. Not to mention that finding a 2001+ 3.0 M5OD 4x4 isn't exactly easy. Neither is finding a 1354M.

I plan to run a 1354M eventually, but may have to settle for a 1354E with one of those little dinky shifster things. I highly doubt I'll settle for a 1350, even though I can get those all day long.

I'm not too worried about collecting all the Level II stuff like the RCM plate, extension housing, and etc. I'll probably make my own floor plate, and make a bracket for the shift linkage and just use a regular extension housing. But if I can find a good deal on the Level II stuff, I might still go that route.

I think that's enough bs for now. I'll try my best to update whenever I can so this doesn't turn into one of those "well what the heck ever happened" threads.

Knuckles and driveshaft de-greased, sanded, cleaned again, primed, and painted. Bagged the knuckles and set them aside on the shelf until I do the swap.

Tore the propeller joint apart since the boot was trashed. Wasn't too familiar with this type of universal joint, but I am now.

Still need to order the rebuild kit. I <3 fresh parts.

Is that someone you? Because I'm eyeing that RCM plate.....

I still have my automatic plate that I'm planning on cutting up, but I'm open to maybe throwing the factory RCM on for the right price.

If you get a chance, see what he wants for the RCM if he still has it.

Well front axle is cleaned up, and diff cover has been re-sealed. I still need to replace the axle seals, but after that the front axle will be ready to go.

Today I picked this up from the junkyard. Gonna take some measurements of where it sits on the frame so I can make sure the pinion angle is set right. I also need to find someone who can weld since I can't.

Thanks man! Swapping to the manual was the best thing I ever did on this truck. But I hear you on the rough riding. My truck is the same way. I'm sure I'll end up doing coil-overs as well down the road.

After grinding and chiseling for 2 hours, I finally got the third mounting bracket off of the section of frame. I need to see if I can find a competent welder, since neither I nor any of my friends fit that description. Once that's done, I'll be ready to install the front axle.

Oh I know it. I plan to move out west in the future, so this will help in the winter.

As for the plate, I'm still playing text tag with Andrew.

I saw that. I'm a snow newb. I've been in Florida all my life, so I've never seen it. I've been to plenty of states where it snows, but not while it's snowing.

I have to ask, all this work on the 4x4 swap and keeping IFS?

Why not go solid axle?

For the very minor amount of wheeling I do, an SAS isn't even remotely worth thinking about. I'm not making runs through nasty mud, or rock climbing. My biggest issue is sugar sand, which I tend to spend a lot of time on, and have gotten stuck numerous times in. The IFS will work just fine in that.

I swapped my 1980 F150 to 4x4 a few years ago, and I didn't SAS that one either.

I finally got a chance to crawl under the truck and install the diff so I can figure out the correct pinion angle.

And now for the bad news.....

Seems that I did more damage than I thought when I hit that stump and bent the lower control arm mount back when I blew the automatic transmission. Looks like I managed to twist the frame to a point where the axle mount bracket holes don't match the bushing hole in the front axle. Luckily this is the side with the adjustment, and not the side that carries the weight of the differential. I can get a smaller bolt to fit, but that's obviously not ideal. I might have to look into having the frame pulled.

Lengthened the hole in the frame bracket so that the differential mount bushing would line up. Screw pulling the frame less than an inch.

All better.

Ordered new axle seals last week, and new CV Axles today.

Also ditched the 9 leaf bastard packs and went down to 5-leaf bastard packs. The truck rides 9 times better than it did before.

The new leaf packs consist of, from top to bottom, Ranger/Explorer/Explorer/Explorer/AAL/Overload. For now the truck leans in the back, but once I remove the spindles and swap in the stock 4x4 knuckles, I think the front will sit lower than the rear again.

9 leaf bastard pack

5 leaf bastard pack

Doesn't sit TOO terrible.
