Welcome to the forum
Looks like a nice project, yes, it needs some love but who doesn't, lol
LMC Truck has non-drivetrain parts for older Rangers: Truck Parts & Truck Accessories for Chevy, GMC, Ford & Dodge Trucks | LMCTruck.com
The diesel and transmission parts will be scarce
1983 would have had the 4-cylinder 59 hp 2.2 L Mazda/Perkins diesel, model D.135
It was only available in '83 and '84 Rangers
1985 to '87 got the Mitsubishi 2.3l turbo diesel, model 4D55
It came with a 4-speed manual but I have read there are 5-speed mazda transmissions that can be used

I do like the 1st Gen Rangers, I had an '88, came with a 2.9L, 5-speed, great little truck. Swapped a 5.0L, out of a '93 Stang, with new auto trans... I ended up with better MPG than the 2.9L.
I too never understood WHY Ford stopped making them except they would cut into the new F150 Sales. Telling Ranger owners to go to an F150 was a bad move. The new Rangers not for me and I can't afford a new F150 I want at $44K.
The Diesel, great option but the older one were just under powered, but if that is where you are at then do it, should turn out to be a great truck.
I was thinking about a new Cummin's R2.8L ! If I had the money and they are CA certified, if I understood Cummin's Rep correctly !
Good Luck with the project and the Diesel install !
Keep pictures coming and any pitfalls you run into !
