Buddy's quarter elliptical fab

My buddies and I did a quarter elliptical to the rear of his 85' bobbed 4runner on 39.5's. There's a few spots on the frame where it hasn't been ground down yet and a few more braces were added later so don't criticize too bad. lol

Nice work. Helped a buddy of mine toss up a similar set up on his 77 F350. And that was ALOT of truck for an elliptical.

Now go get some flex shots!

The setup always looks sketchy, talk about a budget build . . .

You can see the traction bar in pics 3,4,5,6,7.

that different how does it work?
Just like a normal leaf sprung setup, but I believe this gives you better articulation and with the added link, less axle hop.

Looks are always deciving. If done properly, it is no less dangerous that coils or leaf springs.

It is certinally a cool set up tho. I have never seen one in person, and they arnt all that common.

Is that the same rig with the D44 front? Has it snapped yet rolling it out of the shop? LOL jk

Don't quote me on this, but i'm pretty sure you're going to want a panhard bar on that kind of setup. As it sits, there is nothing to help keep it from going left and right. The leaf springs are meant to go up and down as is the track traction bar. The leaf springs alone are not enough to handle the load.

As that sits, i forsee the truck trying to fall sideways off of the suspension

it shouldn't need anything else. the one link he has will keep the axle from rotating and it has one of the same connections as a regular leaf spring and the other end looks much more sturdy so i think its fine. looks good but i agree, we need some action shots!

Your missing some links. That axle is going to flop around under there. 1/4 eleptical is just a 4 or 3 link with the leafs as you have to hold the vehicle up.

The other problem I see is that you have welded the pieces of the leafs themselves. When you heat up spring steel like that you change the material make up of it. That end should have been clamped not welded.

A proper Quarter Elliptical, notice theres a 4 link there with the leafs only holding the weight of the rig, just like a set of coilsprings would.

That "link" or "wrap bar" whatever you want to call it needs a shackle on the front.

The way I'm seeing it that setup isn't going to work well at all.

The axle is going to walk when power is put through it.

I agree, no lateral stability at all, Panhard or something, he said he added more "braces" I took that as more links, panhard, something.

But, he still needs to put a shackle on the one in the pics, then maybe some shocks.

Even then, I still believe that it's going to break if you wheel it.

Sorry man but that's not going to work at all. Needs links to locate the axle under the truck. And the spring mounts at the frame look sketchy at best.

I have 2 friends that are have been running this exact same set-up for years... They do great and I have yet to see them break anything to do with this set-up. It still needs shocks and more braces.

First let me ask you, what is that thing built for?

I pray to god it isn't built for rockcrawling, or any sort of hardcore off-roading what so ever.

Secondly, you don't seem to understand what I'm saying, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that trac bar mounted SOLID on BOTH ends?

Looking at the pics it would seem so, however the pics could be deceiving.

But, lets look at it the way I see it in the pics, the trac bar is mounted SOLID on BOTH ends, do you have any idea whats going to happen when that thing tries to flex? I'll go ahead and tell ya, the axle will twist and either one of the trac bar brackets or the trac bar is going to fail.

I could get into the other problems, but I'm still going on the fact you said you added more braces, so.... put some more pics of what it looks like with the extra braces.

I dont know jack about suspension, but that thing looks sketchy as hell. I might drive int a street, but any off camber trails or rocks and theres no way that thing is staying upright

On the front of that bar, it appears to have either a heim or a tractor implement attachment arm that is a loose goose compared to a heim.
