sweet! im not a VW guy but those VW diesels rock. my buddy had one and he could get almost 50 MPG's with it. who needs a hybrid when you can get that kind of mileage with a real car. lol nice ride!

This 2010 Golf TDI is the replacement for my wife's 08 Subaru Legacy GT.

The Subaru was fun to drive, but sucked in so many ways. It was faster and AWD, but to sum it up it was just cheap feeling. Everything on it felt thin and cheap, the interior wasn't very well thought out, the suspension sucked and so did the shifter. The shifter was long throw with spongy bushings, it was like rowing a boat with rubber paddles. The interior had a ton of creaks and rattles, the climate control was really inaccurate, the clock was unreadable in sunlight, the dash lights would flicker on and off, the heated seat controls were under your elbow and required you to lift your arm and stare back to work them. Mileage was good for what it was, we were getting 25-26mpg.


But the Golf, oh it just feels so much better in every way. Well except for the 0-60 time and AWD, but it is worth it.

Our Golf isn't optioned out, the only options it has is the floor mats and heated seats/mirrors. The rest is standard.

The 2.0L Turbodiesel makes 140 HP and 236 Lb-Ft of torque, matched to a six speed manual transmission. The engine is quiet and smooth, with just the right amount of diesel clatter at idle and low RPM. It pulls hard from 1750 RPM and up. Up to about 3700 RPM anyway, haha. It redlines at 5100RPM, but it doesn't make much power up there and I'm keeping it under 4k for break-in. Due to gearing, 0-60 isn't overly impressive at a little over 8 seconds. The first couple gears go by quick, once in third it pulls hard. Passing power is great, you drive the torque rather than the HP so it just requires more shifting. Speaking of that, shifting is much better than the Subaru. The throw is much shorter, more precise and it just slides right into the next gear. No more fighting with the shifter like on the Subaru.

The interior quality is about 10x better as well. Nice soft touch on everything inside, very well laid out and comfortable seats. There is actually more room than in the Legacy. I could wish for cloth but it isn't an option, maybe katzkins some day in the future. The stereo has CD/MP3, touch screen, sat radio, ipod conrtoller and USB input with a different cable, stereo aux input, and SD card reader. The functions are also controllable via the steering wheel controls, and readable on the MFD between the gauges. There are a lot of nice little features as well. All of the door pockets are lined with smooth felt, so is the glove box. The glove box even has a vent for the a/c in there. There are 'footwell' lights up front that come on full brightness with the doors open, and they stay on with the head lights (you can adjust the brightness with the MFD and steering wheel controls).

The Golf TDI sits on a sport suspension, somewhere in between a standard Golf and a GTI. Ride is firm but smooth, body roll is very controlled, everything feels just right. Personally I want to lower it about an inch and run some different (factory VW) wheels and better tires. The steering is a little different with electric power steering, but it has good feel. No dragging the engine down while turning in parking lots, just nice (nearly) effortless steering.

So far we are averaging about 41mpg in mixed driving with only 300 miles on the car. It is EPA rated at 30/41 I think, but many are reporting 50mpg on trips, and of course after several thousand miles it will increase a bit from breaking it.

The diesel smell is non-existent, even standing by the car with it running. The DPF and two cats probably kill some power, but it is very clean and non-smelly. lol

The car is going in for window tint tomorrow morning, don't worry. I also have different head lights and fog lights, and I'm awaiting clear lamin-x for the heads and fogs, lightly tinted lamin-x for the amber markers up front.
I have a wishlist about a mile long for this car already, but I'm going to try not to go overboard with the spending (yet).

 

The VW website rates the mpgs on this car at 30/41, and with diesel costing more, the hybrids cost less per mile driven. And since this is a Ford site, I'll say, should have bought a Fiesta!
But regardless, nice looking car.

Are you kidding? Have you driven a Hybrid? They suck old man *****. The are PAINfully slow, ride like garbage, look even worse, the interiors of most are a disgusting attempt of a kids idea of what a space ship should like look, the seats blow, I could go on and on. Every hybrid I have driven meets the definition of a penalty box. Plainly stated, they are NOT driver's cars. They are economy cars from top to bottom and feel like it. Drive a new Golf TDI and you well see that while it is economical, is isn't anything like an economy car. It is actually very comfortable and fun to drive.

Besides, we didn't buy it for mileage alone. I mean my truck gets 12-15mpg and I could care less. We looked at GTIs but I was somewhat unimpressed and the I4 gasser sounded almost ricey to me.

A couple of my wife's coworked bought new Priuses (Priuii? lol) over the last six months and the both hate them and complain about them constantly. They say that they are horribly slow, uncomfortable, crappy ride, funky brakes, and aren't getting as good of mileage as they claim to. Both of them said that they were super jealous when my wife brought this to work.

Edit: I will say that Ford has been making nice cars. I like the fusion sport but you can't get it with a manual transmission because Ford has their heads up there as$es on that one. The Fiesta will probably sell okay, and I'm sure it is nice, but it is butt ugly. The interior is even worse, looking at the dash makes me want to vomit.

 

volks tdi ftw, not a fan of the new golf style wise, and the fact that you need a computer to replace your brake pads is extreme. and i bet the gf will eventually b!tch about the diesel pump handles always being dirty and greasey or slimey

Maybe, I already warned her about diesel pumps, we'll see. You can run 600 miles on a tank, so even if she doesn't like it she won't be doing it much!
I don't have a clue what you are talking about regarding brake pads though. Where did you hear that?

 

not stoked on vw....but they got there crap together with the tdi.... in 5 years the car will fall apart ound the engine. i do like the new body style tho

As far as hybrids go, I have driven the Fusion hybrid and I love it. Havent driven the Fiesta yet, but that is the closest in looks to the TDI....

 

Now that you have it you need to make it roll coal. Do it now. I have friends pushing the 250hp mark with simple bolt ons. And they are getting 45+ in the city alone.

 

I disagree. The car doesn't fall apart around the engine. Our 03 Jetta was in awesome shape (inside and out and ran like new) when it was totaled last September with over 50k miles on it. My brother's late 90s Jetta is also in great shape with 120k miles. Several other friends have high mileage VWs that are older and in great condition. My old roommate just bought an 03 with 90k miles that he said is like new. I have had several friends with VWs that are in killer condition, you just have to maintain them like anything else. My 98 Ranger was in great condition with 145k miles, but I had to replace a lot of little things along the way, just like every other car.
Look at the resale on some of the TDIs as well. I have seen early MKIV TDIs selling for $8-9k with over 150k miles on them.

Yes, the Fiesta is still ugly as f-ck, inside and out. If you like that boyracer look in a slow under-powered car, then cool. You should go buy one if you like it.

Personally I like a cleaner looking car that doesn't look like a 15 year old should be driving it with big white DC sunglasses.

Hell yeah! The TDIs are very responsive to mods! The newer versions are filled with emissions crap like new trucks. Two cats and a DPF. I haven't heard of anyone doing a full turbo back with dpd delete yet, but I imagine with that, nozzles, turbo and tuning the 2.0L could be a monster. I don't think I'll do that much to it though. Maybe if we keep it a while and pay it off, it'll become my daily and I'll play with it more. There is at least one company right now that sells a reflash for 180hp/295tq.

Brian. Dont pretend VW cars are reliable. They are junk. The TDi's are cool, but like others said "VW's fall apart." We owned a 03 Turbo beetle and a 05 Jetta. Both lemons. For the price of that TDi I would have got a fiesta or fusion. Way nicer. But good luck anyway. gotta love the economy of the TDi's!

sweet car man. my aunt has an 04 jetta vr6. awesome little car for sure. hasn't had many problems with it. i love the TDI's too. i wouldnt mind having one and modding the crap out of it!

Ball joints go bad frequently
Tie rod ends go bad frequently
Wheel bearings go bad frequently
Auto hubs are a huge fail
Clutch gave out, tons of problems getting hydraulics bled
Rear brakes lock up when wet
Door switched failed
Transfer case didn't work well in the cold
IAC valve went bad


Oh I know there were plenty of other little things, same on the explorer.
Timing chain rattles, auto trans issues, 2-3 shift slip, intake manifold gaskets, tons of common stuff.
Quit drinking the cool aid guys, anything will need some work with time. And I can tell you that our 08 Subaru had way more issues at 20k miles than our 03 jetta did with over 20k miles.

I really do like the fusion sport but stupid ford won't equip it properly.
