115,000 miles/abused and need advice
Hey I just bought a '97 2.3 2WD Ranger for 2,000 bucks. Good deal runs great. I talked to the guy and he changed the oil every 3 or 4 thousand miles or so. Eh who knows. Anyways I was thinking that he probably didn't do much up keep on this truck as he said he let his grandson drive it to school and back everyday. So I'm thinking that it's been abused heavily. I plan on starting with the Timing belt, water pump, oil pump, plugs, wires, coil pack and coolant flush. That should bring me up to speed. I know the plugs are crap cuz they haven't been changed since he bought it in '97....idiot. I won't be able to get around to the plugs this week or the next cuz I'm working waaaay toooooo much OT, looks like fun, I love how the drivers side plugs are under the IM. Question. What other things might i go over so I can at least get 3 or 4 more years out of my truck. Question 2. More technical. I took the intake piping of the TB this morning to pour in some chamber cleaner, in hopes that'd clean things up, especially with the lousy spark. When I took it off the truck wouldn't idle. How come. I've been racing and building imports for years now and I never had this happen when removing tubing from any TB???????? I said screw it and sprayed it in the hole that comes from the top of the valve cover, EGR? I put my finger over the hole and no suction even at 3/4 throttle. I think my cleaner may be just floating in the tubing cuz there wasn't any smoke coming out of the exhaust pipes, which is normal for my race engine. I don't know I'm new to Rangers and I hope someone can help me learn more about them. I might even build it a little after I break into the 12's with my import. Thanks.
