2.3 140ci Exhaust Questions? Cat's, and Pipes.

Ok.
Here we go.
I have a 97 Ranger, with the 2.3.
Recently(about 5 months ago) I had my truck taken to a "shade-tree" exhaust shop, to have them patch a leak in the pipe.
When they had it up on racks,
they decided that the catalytic converter was bad.
Being that I was at work, and I had my mother run it to the shop for me,
they decided they could take advantage of her.
Which they did,
and did not even tell her they cut the catalytic converter off.
Later that evening after I pulled my 8 hours,
I come home to find out that I had no converter!!!!!!!
The next day I called the shop, and they swore against it!
Then when I finally got it out of them,
they swore it was clogged!
After threatening to take them to court,
they decided to give the converter back, and honestly they did a rather nice job of fixing the exhaust!
Except...
I had no converter!!!
Now everyone told me,
that my truck would run better without one,
But honestly Ive seen a drastic decrease in fuel economy since the converter has been off.
And I am a stickler when it comes to economy!!!

So my question is:

Ebay,
You can find the complete OEM exaust system on ebay,
And for less than 150 buckeroos!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...TQ:MOTORS:1123

Also you can get the Complete converter system for less than 150 bucks.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-97...Q5fAccessories
My question is????

Would this system be a direct bolt up?
If not,
what procedures would I have to take to avoid shade tree mechanics?

Im tired of getting ripped off, by those who have no more mechanical experience than I do myself!

Any Imput would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
and God Bless...

Specs on truck:
1997 Ford Ranger
2.3 Liter 140 C.I. 4-cylinder
Auto Matic
2wd

*EDIT*
I would also like to ask...
Would the converter be the blame in my decrease of fuel economy?
I was getting around 280-340 miles on 16 gallons.

Now, and for the last 5 months without converter Ive been getting around,
220 miles on 16 gallons.

*ADD*

Also,
the Oxygen sensor have been welded directly into the pipe,
would this not be harsh on the sensors themself?

GOD BLESS!!!!
TANKSS ABUNCH!

You should just take your truck to a reputable shop and ask them to fix it up for you. I had a shop install a new muffler and cat on my truck. it was $158 out the door. That includes parts AND labor.

What they did was a federal crime. (I know, I know... I do it too, but that is for "off road" use only.) If you google EPA and call the number I bet they will be fined, and have to get you a brand new exhaust. Your computer is seeing values way off of its map, and compensating by dumping extra fuel in just to "play it safe" - this is the nature of your fuel economy woes. Whenever I work on any car, we make the owner sign a waver knowing that exhaust modifications are made entrusting that the owner uses the car for off-road, and race use.

Oh yeah, if your cat was really bad, it should throw some sort of P400 Code.

Keep in mind, less back pressure is only good to a certain point. Its a scientific fact that hot gases move faster than cold gases. This is why you can get better flow with hot gases under pressure compared to having a fat-colder pipe. This is more true with your N/A truck compared to Turbocharged examples.

Wow,
You are really educated?
Just curious where are you from?
Everyone here is always hiping, "Cut the converter...more power...better economy." etc.
Lots of, Ignorants here.
I am ignorant...totally...but then again, I don't work on OTHER peoples vehicles!!!
HAHA!
Thanks for the help.

I work on and tune performance cars for a living. (Well half of a living) With the correct parts & programming any combustion powered vehicle will benefit in performance without a catalytic converter. When you take of the converter it is big drama for the ECU. It tries to find a happy medium and just fails. This is why it runs good, then runs poor, good, poor... The computer tries to protect the engine by richening and retarding. In most cases the only closed loop adjustments you can make on the ecu are very limited. (target lambda is a good example, most of the functions are controlled by the built in closed loop logic) - I have to know what I am doing, if I blow someone's **** up I'd be in alot of trouble (gulp) - I can't tell you too much, I want you guys to keep buying catback systems and cold air intakes. How would I make any money if nobody did that? (winkwink)

HAHA!!!
Thanks!

I commercially tie flies used in fly fishing.
There are millions of individual patterns.
I market roughly 400 different patterns.
Would you know of all the millions of differnt lures to imitate billions of insects, that I only use 3 differnt flies!!!
True!

HAHA!
