Gears, Mpgs, and two pOint Tha rees!
Ok.
Flame me.
I could not FIND ANYTHING I NEED.
I usually don't post because Ranger-Forums has this awesome,
awesome,
search tool, that can find ANYTHING!
Im serious.
The search tool,
helped me locate the whereabouts of Waldo, Presley(The King...aint really dead...hiding out in Gatlinburg Tn), and Bin-Laden!!!
But anyways, here she goes.
97
2.3
Auto
Stock Tires
Not sure on current rear end gear ratio,
guessing 3.73's.
Looking to change gears,
kinda low geared.
At high rpms, at 60 MPH...
What would be the best for traveling highway as far as fuel economy goes?
Thanks.

But to the OP,
You might want to look into 3.55's. But with that 4 cyl, I personally wouldnt. What RPM's are you running at?
You also realize that a 4 cyl will have to rev up higher that a 3.0 or 4.0 right? The thing I would be worried about, is if you go for a lower gear ratio, you might be out of the motors usable power. This might cause your tranny to shift more, putting pre-mature wear on it.
But post up your axel code, it should be on the inside of the drivers door jam. Then you can be sure of the axel ratio. If you can't find it tehre, look on your rear diff, there should be a diff tag on the diff cover.

my little brother has a 2.5L, 25" tires, and 3.73s...so he's probably running higher freeway rpm's than you as he's running 25" tires. He's pulling some DAMN GOOD highway mileage out of it. and DAMN GOOD in-town mileage as well.
IMO, leave it the way it is. 4cyls are meant to run higher RPM's as they like to spin. They are more efficient when they are turnin RPM's and while staying in the usable power range.
First and foremost, you need to confirm your current ratio. As said above, look on your door jamb to get your axle code OR check the rear diff cover and look for a tag on the passenger side of the cover. If you've got something like 4.10's, then yes, i suggest going to a 3.73...and to get that, i'd highly suggest just swapping the axle($100-250) rather than getting new gears installed(upwards of $500 installed).

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Axles.html go there too see what gears you have. I reccommend 4.10 gearing with a 2.3 auto.

I got a stick on my 2.5, I'm getting about 25+ on highway and 22.5 mix mpg. My tires are the stock size (I think, just got the thing). I like my mileage but the thing has no *****, no power what so ever. How was your mileage before and after.

OH, and to any 4-cyl haters, i love my little 2.5L. I've put her through more crap than you can imagine. ive filled the bed to the brim with sand and brick. so damn low that the sides of the body shave little peices of my tires, keep in mind im running 215/75r15 but still she aint ever cried or moaned. and my little 99 has 250,000 miles...
