1996 Battery light coming on, yet battery and alternator work'

you were working on the timing and forgot to unplug the battery?
post your year and model, and what you were doing that led up to this... battery light typically means that you are running off of battery power, not alternator power, so your alternator may be putting out the voltage you need, but not the amperage, or could be slightly low on amperage, so it's not putting up quite enough to keep up with the demand, and you are slowly running down the battery
