I bought this ranger for $500.00. Kid put it in a ditch and smashed the right side door in, mom wanted it gone. Right place right time, no rust got real lucky. Anyhow, this truck sat for awhile and needed the radiator rplaced due to the ditch, did that and the thing runs great. However, the thermo was stuck and after some heat, it opened but I believe its stuck open now. Tried to replace the thermo, but I cant seem to find the bolts that hold it in place. Anybody have a diagram on how this thing is attached and maybe a how-to?

 

Thermostat — Water, 2.5L


Removal

CAUTION:
Do not pry on the water thermostat (8575) to remove.

1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding» in this section.

µ 2. Disconnect the heater return hose at the thermostat housing.

µ 3. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor (12A648) and the water temperature sensor.

µ 4. Disconnect the upper radiator hose (8260) from the outlet connection.

µ 5. Remove the bolts. Pull the elbow away from the cylinder head (6049).

µ 6. Remove the water thermostat.


Installation

µ 1. Note:
Do not become concerned if the thermostat tabs are not flush with the housing. This is normal and they will press into the housing when installed against the head.

Install the thermostat into the water outlet connection:

l Press the housing by hand.

l Align the thermostat tabs into the recessed areas on the housing.

µ 2. Install the water outlet housing with the thermostat against the head using care so as not to dislodge the thermostat from the housing.

µ 3. Note:
Reinstall the constant tension clamp in the same position from where it was removed.

Connect the upper radiator hose to the water outlet connection.

µ 4. Connect the engine coolant temperature sensor and the water temperature sensor.

µ 5. Note:
Reinstall the constant tension clamp in the same position from where it was removed.

Connect the heater return hose.

6. Fill the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding» in this section.


And a photo shows the two T-stat housing bolts get 15-22 ft/lbs of Torque. That housing looks like an elbow and "appears" to be beside the crank pulley. Hard to tell from the artwork.

 

Thanks for the help. It was pretty tight trying to removed the housing bolts. So I removed the fan and shroud to give me some easier clearance and room to manuver. I have big hands and a heavy jacket on and it's pretty cold. The bolt I couldn't see was on the left facing the front of the truck; I just stuck the socket wrench up in there and felt around with it until it caught and prayed to god it wasn't breakable.lol. Following the directions was a great help, thanks again, cleaned everything up good and proceeded to go to three different parts stores for a stat. they all had the wrong one or something that didnt fit. So a trip to the dealer and alls well. Did the install and cleanup got her all warmed up and took a ride. Nice and toasty inside the cab now and warm up is a little quicker as well.
