1986 ranger 2.9l v6 to 2.3t?
howdy, i got a 86 ranger, 4x4 with the 2.9l v6 and 5 speed, 4 wheel drive obviously.
the motor runs good, but is gutless as ****. i would acually put money on this 2.9l v6 being the worst v6 motor ever built. not to mention the tiny radiator, ****ty clutch fan, and useless "shroud" that causes the truck to heat up sitting for about 30 seconds.
ive swapped a 2.9l into my buddies ranger when his overheated and cracked a head, but what i want to know here is if its possible to swap a 2.3t motor into my chassis with minimal work.
eg... if the 2.3t will bolt to the 5 speed in my truck... i definatly do not want to attempt to convert this truck to 2wd if thats what it will take to be able to use the turbo 4 banger
i have no idea if the 4x4 rangers ever had 2.3s in them... if they did then obviously the 2.3t should fit right in there.
any help/advice is welcome.
thanks.

those 2.9s can REALLY pull stock if they are just tuned and timed right... if it's actually a 2.8 then i can understand the gutless thing, but the 2.9s are pretty damn strong motors.
as for going to a 2.3T you would need the bellhousing from a 2.3 version of your exact transmissin, or a 2.3 4x4 tranny. you will need the 2.3 motor mounts, and of course the wireing harness, computer, and ALL sensors from the 2.3T and doing up all the wireing and making sure you can fuel it properly, if you have the EFI 2.9 with only the in tank pump then you can just stick one of the larger flow pumps in there easily, otherwise you will need to swap over to a higher flow pump if you have the seperate on the frame rail fuel pump. and of course you will have to do the exhaust, and modify the heater box a little or flip the manifold and get rid of your a/c or do one of hte other methods of getting the snail to fit in there.
