Coolant reservoir (degas) hose

I am replacing the hose that connects to the bottom of the coolant reservoir and when I took the old one off, there was this think metal sleeve in the end of the hose. Is this sleeve supposed to go up inside of the plastic nipple of the reservoir (to help support the plastic nipple)? It had come loose and was inside the hose, I really don't know what to do with it. I can only get it about 0.5" inside the reservoir nipple without taking off the reservoir and tapping it in. But I am not sure if it is even needed. Thanks.

I think it would be there to prevent hose from collapsing if bottom of tank got a little clogged, I would put it in that 1/2" and then install the hose over it
