1997 Ranger - Water Pump Silicone Check

Okay, so after all weekend I must be on the right track. In the beginning I set out to fix a squealing belt but then I got way deeper. The mecahnic I brought this too was very good about inspecting everything the quoting me all the odds and ends, nooks and crannies and everything else. But anything goes wrong you sue him right at a price tag of $700, lol

okay. The water pump, I am trying to get rid of this squeal and at the same time maybe save myself from some future hassels and anything going on right now.

I removed the water pump and thermostat and put a new one each in, somewhere there was a coolant leak, then thought about it and realized that the thermo did not have gasget on, okay added gasket still leaking, torqued up the themostat housing again, leak went away. YES!, but still water pump is leaking?????HUH. I know I put both Orings in there and some silicone it should be fine, Well, I only added just a little silicone to the pump itself where the o ring is, probably not enough becuase for silicone it would need to be on both sides of the part to actually work, okay that failied.......

Now I noticed that the metal angular tube that connects to hoses has a seal on there, and I didnt even silicone it. The question here is HOW MUCH SILICONE? both the engine side and the metal angular tubing side. My other question is that is there any possibilies a gasket would need silicone too for the thermop housing or is the gasket by it self fine and should i put any silicone over bolt holes, I am thinking yes now!

---------------------------------

Bottom line is I don't wanna take this stuff off here again you've even got to remove the Alternator just to get that metal tube mounted in the right place. geez it aint that easy without removing the power steering pump mount

okay there she blows, i am waiting for the silicone to dry enough to tighten up the bolts, I think I found the problem is that I didn't put enough silly string. so this should fix it up nice, the main problem would have been on the conecter pip like I said cause I just put a thin coat but this time it looks great like it will work.

Alrighty so got here all back together, found the belt squeak that was a missing bolt in alternator mount > engine, no, not the alternator - there are threee bolt that attach this mounting harness to engine and if you are mising one or more it wont align anything properly, and one was broken when I took it apart, so I forgot to put the hole test bolt back in and I only had 1 bolt out of the three......

and personally I know that needs all three because there is too much movement in between bolt and hole.

when I put it all back together it ligned up perfectly and that means sooooo much.

oh yeah and about the silicone, if you only have a o-ring seal on water pump you definetly want to seal that too, clean and dry surfaces, apply RTV, insert skrews and hand tighten then after one hour tighten to spec. - these must be tight not loose and I like to put sealant RTV around the holes too it doesn't hurt if you get some inside a hole or what not it would probably help......

thats the one and have a good night
