Hello, NewBie here with CEL...

Whats up all?
PROUD new owner of a real nice, 2 owner 2000 Ranger XL, 2.5L 5 speed, 94K, nice truck.

Been going through it, blah blah.
Love it. bought it as an extra vehicle, for around the house, etc. Think I am gonna be driving it alot more than I anticipated to, as it is really a very cool little truck.

In SEPT 2010, for inspection, maintenance, etc the truck has new plugs, wires, air filter, tires, brakes, exhaust. Tons of new quality parts, and it shows, very clean shape.

Anyway, during my inspection I noticed that the gas cap hand grip is separated from the cap itself, 2 pieces if you will, it's done. Now I know this is not good, and plan to replace like yesterday, I am on it. Now, with that said, in hopes that is really all it is, today while running the truck and letting it idle in the driveway, it started kinda choking up and running a bit rough, I got in it, playing with the gas a bit, etc, then the CEL came on. I took it around the block a few times, check engine did not go out but it ran just like it has been for the past couple of days of ownership, no hesitation, misfire, nothing, just fine... I did notice a slight run away idle once or twice, possibly lean/code, etc???

I am a newbie to rangers but quite the home wrencher, so open ears. Is there an affordable home remedy/tool that can be acquired, recommended for CEL code pulls, etc that I should proactively get my hands on? Any feedback here on my issue?

Other than that runs like a German tank, this thing is gonna be around a while.

OH, and thx for havin' me...

Sounds like maybe a couple of your nuts are loose. But that's just me. Need codes you have to be listed.(could go by autozone in the meanwhile & have them scan it for you.) By the way. ...welcome.

Well, as an update:
Grabbed a new fuel cap off the shelf in Pep Boys(convenient)
Stopped by Auto Zone and took advantage of the free diag via their tool(Pep Boys needed an appt later), code pulled P0171, Fuel Trim Bank One...

Got home, pulled the battery, installed new cap, added fuel injection cleaner(Lucas baby) and some Mystery Oil to the Oil. Let sit for 30 min for a full reset, then started it up, no CEL, and did not come back on with about a 10-15 mile drive, fueled up on the cleaner(added 10 gallons), etc, etc...

Noticed a slight chop here or there, and a runaway idle twice while sitting at a light, etc. (lean?)

Should i just rock it for a bit and see if it cleans itself through, adjusts for a correct/new fuel cap, etc?
Possible injector issues/problems?

Yeah, just in case you don't know what that means, It means to list whatever codes your ecm is showing on this site if you ever expect to get any help. We can guess all day but it probably won't do you any good. Do you kinda know what I mean now? (another small hint is that the gas cap hand grip missing will not make your CEL come on) po171 codes are for a lean code.

try this & see if it will help you. I will try to send it in common ENGLISH so you can understand it.
Rocking it won't help or else I could make millions at my shop.
