Ok so for the past week ive been smelling gas in the oil but now its getting stronger also now when im accelerating im smelling gas. and when i take my truck to 4000 rpms the check engine light will come on and when i slow down it goes off. the truck is a 1991 for ranger xlt 2.3l 4cylinder 5 speed. any ideas???

 

code scanner, thats the only thing i can think of, i haven't heard of gas in the oil before, but if you scan it and find out let me know then, obd1 scanners only cost $32 from AA. Sorry i'm not much help.

 

sounds like a rich mixture so could maybe be a injector but more like a rings and or seals and if you smelling gas in the oil i hope you are doing the oil changes sooner since gas will thin the oil and thin oil cause early engine wear and if you want to keep the motor for as long as able then i would be doing oil changes like every 1000 maybe to keep the gas level low in the oil

 

couple of things it could be.......cogged EGR port in the upper intake.....bad front 02 sensor and or a toated thermostat. clogged EGR will cause cel and running rich prob as well as a bad front o2....bad thermostat wont allow engine to get to proper operating temp and computer will stay in warm up mode that will cause it to dump more fuel.
