oil pump??
i've read multiple times in class. adds or other places about rangers having "new oil pumps"....are the oil pumps a common failure on these engines(97 2.3)? i have no issues with mine as far as i know, no knocks, gets oil pressure about 2 seconds after start up (running 15w40)....just thhought i'd check on that because i see it often.

I have a '92 with a 2.3. My pump went at about 80,000 miles. I always had instant pressure and it was in a good range. When it went, the pressure would drop suddenly and not come back. Next startup it would be ok, and then drop to nothing. I assumed dirty or clogged screen and put everything & everything into crankcase to no avail. In my truck (standard bed of 6', just 2 door) the oil pan cannot be dropped. The engine must be pulled. So my guess is that if yours is the same, maybe someone needed the engine pulled and was smart enough to change the pump while he had access. (It's kind of like changing a timing belt on my Camry when it hit 140,000 mile, may as well change the water pump too.)
Good luck.
Good luck.

The oil pump is always located inside the oil pan. (The exception is high performance race cars where they have extenal pumps) I can't speak for yours which is a '97 where as mine is a 92 2.3, But I just looked under my power steering pump and there's nothing but the steerring box. About 2 feet behind the PS pump under the #3 spark plugs is where the oil filter is on mine.
I'm curious, is there still the 2 second delay before your oil pressure guage comes up?
