oil pump??

i've read multiple times in class. adds or other places about rangers having "new oil pumps"....are the oil pumps a common failure on these engines(97 2.3)? i have no issues with mine as far as i know, no knocks, gets oil pressure about 2 seconds after start up (running 15w40)....just thhought i'd check on that because i see it often.

The only pump issues I'm aware of relate to the 3.0 engines. The cam syncro gear fails and the oil pump drive is lost , not the pump itself.
15w40 in a 2.3 ? Must be the engine bearings are shot if you need that heavy of an oil.

I have a '92 with a 2.3. My pump went at about 80,000 miles. I always had instant pressure and it was in a good range. When it went, the pressure would drop suddenly and not come back. Next startup it would be ok, and then drop to nothing. I assumed dirty or clogged screen and put everything & everything into crankcase to no avail. In my truck (standard bed of 6', just 2 door) the oil pan cannot be dropped. The engine must be pulled. So my guess is that if yours is the same, maybe someone needed the engine pulled and was smart enough to change the pump while he had access. (It's kind of like changing a timing belt on my Camry when it hit 140,000 mile, may as well change the water pump too.)
Good luck.

Thanks for info, my truck is all well but I was curious to oil pump issues. Also isn't the oil pomp driven off timing belt? I thought I saw in a pic that the round piece bolted to engine, driver side, under ps pump, that's the oil pump I thought?

The oil pump is always located inside the oil pan. (The exception is high performance race cars where they have extenal pumps) I can't speak for yours which is a '97 where as mine is a 92 2.3, But I just looked under my power steering pump and there's nothing but the steerring box. About 2 feet behind the PS pump under the #3 &#4 spark plugs is where the oil filter is on mine.
I'm curious, is there still the 2 second delay before your oil pressure guage comes up?

hmm...i think it was on alldata or something i noticed this "oil pump"...it was when i installed the timing belt i had to route it around this..piece..watever it is. but yes mine does still have that delay for oil pressure..

Could be the pressure sensor.I would hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge and see for sure.I had a old F-150 with same problem, but the mechanical gauge eased my mind.Good Luck "barnski"
