I suppose this story starts a couple of years ago. While on a trip in my 95 Ranger (4 cyl, 5 speed), it stalled and left me stranded. It was the timing belt. I had it towed home and had the local shop replace the belt. Afterwards it would tend to rough idle at stop lights and such. It did ok while moving. I had the mechanic re-check it and he found nothing wrong.

Recently I had a tuneup and other repairs (a/c and brakes) done. Now it's worse. When backing out of my driveway it will stall. When waiting for traffic to clear so I can get onto the road, it will stall. It also seems a bit hesitant to restart. When cruising and not needing much gas, you can feel the engine stumble. It doesn't stall but it runs rough until you give it gas. I've had the engine codes checked and none show up.

I'm going to try to find another mechanic to look at it but I can't keep tossing money at it. I live in a rural area and most shops are small operations. Any suggestions?

Sounds like if all that was originally touched was the timing belt that the timing is off.

I just got the truck back this evening. He put it on the computer, nothing showed. He test drove it a couple of time with the computer hooked up and once at about 55 mph he said it hiccuped. The computer showed the crankcase/crankshaft position sensor to be the problem. He checked it and found it loose. He tightened it up and said it seemed to clear up the problem.

It went ok on the short drive home. I'll drive it a bit tomorrow and see how it goes.
