P1443 question

I have the P1443 code for my CEL. I have also experienced some gas leaking when I fill my tank up. I know I need to replace the gas filler neck. Is it possible that this will fix my code? I have ran the smoke test on my truck and fixed all of the other small leaks. The mechanics told me it was the purge sensor, but I hate to keep throwing parts into my truck and still come up short on the back side.

The filler tube is part of the emissions system. If it or the gas cap leaks , it will throw a code.
Since gas is leaking when you fill up , you pretty much just found the problem.

Yup i had a cracked filler neck and a p1443 code. 40 bucks and an hour later and no more leaks and the light has been off for 2-300 miles, and i didnt have to reset the computer it was just gone on start up. Still kicking myself for not fixing it earlier, ive had the truck for over 3 years and its always leaked gas and the cel would come and go after filling up.

A hour later? How did you change yours? I hear the best way is to remove the bed, but if you have a trick that you are willing to share...

ya it was pretty easy considering mines a 95 and is pretty rusty under the bed. Hit the 6 t55 bolts with pb blaster a day before you try to loosen them. I just used a breaker bar and a long jack handle to break them loose. Then unplug the connector for the tailights under the bed and unbolt the filler neck. Have a buddy help you lift the drivers side of the box up and i wedged like 4 short 2x4's between the bed and frame and had plenty of room to reach the tank. From there its just a hose clamp on the filler neck holding it on.

i am having a problem similar to this. i bought my truck and the first day it leaked gas on fill up. there was also a CEL on. replaced the filler hose and lost 200 bucks and it was still on. later down the road i have replaced the purge valve and the purge solonoid or thermistitor whatever it is called and i am still throwing code p1443. i disconnected the vaccum hose between the two wth the truck running and it has a real strong vaccum. what could be the problem?

You may need to run a smoke test on it. There could be a break in one of the lines. How old is your truck? Mine is a 97 and I had a found that a few of my lines were starting to deteriorate. I replaced those, and my purge valve and solenoid are on their way. I want to change those first because it is A) easier and B) cheaper. I say run a smoke test and check the lines.

mine is also a 97 and I replaced both of those parts and all of the hoses that are visible between those parts. I cannot find a place to get a smoke test

I'm not sure if you could do the test yourself or not, but you could just follow the hoses all the way from the fuel tank to the intake manifold and if they look dry rotted or cracked, you probably need to change it. I changed some of mine myself just the other day. I got 2 foot of hosing from Autozone for about 7 bucks. Its really easy, and takes just a few minutes. Just remember to get about a foot more hose than you need just in case you make a mistake cutting it.

Its a standard fuel hose. I want to say it is 1/4", but I will check when I get home.

Well finally got my purge valve and sensor in. I installed them, and now my truck as a very rough idle. Do they just need time to be broken in or is there something else that could be causing this problem?

they shouldn't need broken in. I replaced the thermistitor which is the little sensor closest to the motor and within five minutes it worked perfect and cleared the cel

did you disconnect the battery to try and clear the code after you installed the new parts?

I didn't have to do anything like that. I turned the truck off for installation let it off for about ten minutes after install and h drove it and it cleared my cel but I never had a rough idle. maybe you have a vacuum leak ?

fwiw my gas filler neck leaks and it does not throw a code.
i replaced the purge valve and solenoid and the code hasn't re-appeared in 2 years.
replace the purge valve first because it is the cheaper of the 2. some people have
had success by cleaning the purge valve with carb cleaner. oh and on mine the solenoid is nearest to the charcoal canister and the purge valve is nearest to the engine side.

no the solenoid is the long metal clad cylinder shaped sensor. the plastic one is the purge valve.

ooh lol I see. I replaced both anyways so I'm not worried about what they are anymore. since you have the same truck as me though I would like to ask about how many mpgs you get with combined highway and city. cause my cel finally cleared and I never knew what I should actually get now that it's fixed.I use to get a little over 300 on a full tank. is that about right or should I expect better

guess you have the 15 gal. tank? mpg's are effected by a lot of things but doubt replacing those parts will have a positive effect. i would clear the codes and start the fuel trim relearn process again. air up your tires to at least 35psi, make sure your air filter and plugs/wires are in good shape, lose any excess weight in the truck, and go from there.

i'm getting low to mid 20s mpg average depending on the ambient temperature using crap 87 octane ethanol laced gas.
