i have a 91 ranger with the 2.3l runs good but it sat for about 8 months and now it wont go above 3500rpms. before it would go up to around 5500rpms. any idaes what would cause it to do that?

 

Have you put fresh gas in the truck since you have started driving it again?

 

Check for a mouse nest in the air filter box. Mice also like to steal and store dry dog food there.
If you have changed the oil recently, check to be sure that it is not overfilled.

 

ya its got fresh gas in it. could it be the fuel filter???

 

Fuel filter should be replaced anyway there around 9 bucks and take all of 5 mins to change.

 

Another reason I have had a vehicle not rev all the way up is a clogged catalytic converter. Maybe a moused liked your exhaust pipe more than your air box?

 

It was warm and tosty in there! Did any mice runaway when the truck was started? lol

 

Funny you say that. I had a problem with that on my girl's Tracker. Had to scoop out a handful of dog food every time I changed the oil. Never had any problem with it on the ranger though.

I would agree with changing the fuel filter.

 

It might be a good idea to check for throttle cable stretch while you are at it. Mine was only getting to 70%. Zip ties and 5 mins later it was back to 100%! But this probably is not the problem, since that is a slow process, not something I would expect from sitting. Worth a check, though.
