Bogging

I have a 2001 ford ranger 2.5l 4 cylinder. When I start off in 1st gear and get to going, sometimes it seems like it bogs down and all of a sudden it has a lot of power, like something is keeping it back.. my friend has a ranger and has the same problem, anyone know why it does this?

The power band is pretty narrow on a 4 cyl. I drove one for years without a tach, and just had to learn to keep it in the 3000 rpm range till you level off at the speed you want to be. Stout gears help, 4.10 and up. Mine had 3.42 gears and I carried 500#'s of tools everywhere. Try to remove any dead weight, anything you aren't going to use soon. I'd get the E-fan if I didn't already have it. Then live with it, trade it, or do the 5.0 swap. I traded mine. bob

Damn, mines not no where close to bein that bad. I usually take off at around 2000RPMS and just ride the clutch a bit so it doesn't bog down. If you gotta ge it to 3500 either your not riding the clutch enough and just dumping it or something is wrong with it, but if you gotta get it to 3500 your def burning more gas too.
