sas width ??

I bought a d44 out of a 70s f250 high pinion leaf spring set up. Its way to wide to fit under the truck i know i needed to cut it down but i dont know how much. What would be a good width to run ?? I dont really want it to stick out to much its mostly driven on the street (i dont want to admit it but its most just a mall cuirser only sees the dirt prob every other month) The tire size that im going to run is 35/12.5.

Wheel choice is also a big factor with track width.

if your not realy going to wheel it that hard you should trade that d44 for a dana 30
it will save you money, shorter track width, and the same the lug pattern

now that im about done with my sas and have been around guys that are huge into offroading, i wish i would have bought full width axles for my truck. if i was you id keep it and find a rear axle as well. and yes yoll need a new front driveshaft. if you go to www. fordrangerforum .com, scroll to the very bottom on build logs and find my thread, rangerlucs SAS. i asked about every question that could be asked during a sas and randy (rstangboi) answered all of them. youll find any info u need there. and like jeff pointed out, u better start doing research!!!!!!!!!

thanks (rangerluc) red threw yours helped a lot kinda going the same as u leefs and a yota box but i need to replace my rear axle too i only have the 7.5 rear so i found 1 that 8.8 out of a explorer that ive been looking at
also i had someone say look at this ( RazorsEDGE’s 2003 Coil SAS ) and it helped a lot too i belive u dont need to change your tcase out i found what looked like a direct bolt in shaft on his page if that helps u. I know the steering shaft dosent matter witch u run coils or leafs as long as it clears your hoops.
( just got his reply and he said they were custom made so any good drive shaft shop should be able to make a shaft that works )

im going to go back to the place i got my d44 axle and see if i can just trade for a d30 with abs hoping the toon wheels are the same count as the rangers ??? any body know for sure
i found a pic on this site that showed a d44 rotor that had a ranger tone wheel mounted on it but cant find it know to count the spaces in the tone wheel so i can check the jeep d30 tone wheel with a oscilloscope to make sure they match

thanks for the help everyone any help will be much appreciated

ya u can get a driveshaft made with the same output which is that wierd round output, but its only got like 3 degrees of droop or some low number like that. which is why u swith to a normal output shaft which gives you more droop so u dont rip your driveshaft out of the tcase. and stick with the 44. or at least find a 44 like i did out of an early bronco, its the same width as the rear axle. or keep the 44 u have, and instead of buying an 8.8, buy a full width 9". thats a good setup right there, and full width 44 up front and full 9" in the rear. but once again, read every leaf sas thread there is on this site. im almost done with mine but i still look at those just about every day to get info and ideas

i would stay with the axle i have but my truck is mostly on pavement and i really dont want my wheel to stick out past my fenders. most ri/ma police already dont like my truck so i dont want to give myself more atention by my wheels sticking out past my fenders plus im really trying to keep the abs working in my truck if i go to the d30 i dont need to pay a machine shop to make the tone wheel fit the d44 rotors the d30 comes with abs if u get it out the right jeep

ya true. just when u get the d30, make sure its the straight 30 and not the one with the vaccuum actator on it. at least thats what everyone told me when i was considering a d30, but then i decided to go with the 44.

If you go the dana 30 route, stay away from the YJ's those are the ones that had the vacuum actuator.. Go for the 97 and newer TJ's the have the easiest setup to use. There are quite a few cherokee's out there from I believe 98 to 04 that have the same 30.... If your looking for a d44 that you don't have to cut down, look into the TJ's from 2000 to 2006 There are certain models that had it as an option or standard. 2000 -03 Saraha - option 2004 -6 Rubicon had the standard d44 front and rear with a locker.... They're the rarest ones of the group so good luck...

time out.....

you have 15x12s and you are worried about the width of the axle? haha

get rid of those 15x12s

buy a wheel that actually fits over the caliper like a 17x9 and get a good back spacing. that axle you have is wide but you have to have the axle so wide because the ranger frame is so wide, you need room to fit all of that. you shouldnt run wide crappy wheels and shorten the axle, thats crazy.

you might be able to shorten the axle 6.5 inches or so on the passenger side and side it over. you will need a custom inner axle on that side though.

Then buy the right wheels and you would be sitting ok, personally i would leave it as is and just buy the right wheels.

thanks for saying that i didnt even think about the wheels i bought fitting that d44 i have but the axle i bout looks bigger that the 1 in that pic. i went back to the guy i bought my axle from and asked him he was sure he sold me a d44 and he said no did some more digging and found out he sold me a d60 high pinion not a d44 like i ask for there is no way im running that big of an axle in my truck i dont need an axle that big yet if i need it in the future i will have it. not going back to him. doing to look around for a d44 that came from a wrangler with the lockers then i dont need to buy them i used to work at a chry dealler and i will see if they have any crashed wrangler rubicons that i can buy the axles out of if not i think im just going to use a d30 with abs that would prob be the cheapest for me dont need all the room for the coils and the track bar and links im going to run leafs witch for me is easyer

x2 on all Zach said. I didn't care to pop back in here but wow....15x12's and you're worried about width!?!?!??

Here's a fullsize 44 running sucked in 8's or 9's..... I think his track width is within 2" of my 15x10's and 12.50's....

Keep in mind too, he's got a 9" in the back too.

you know the D60 and D44 are the same width on F250s right? Maybe an inch different.

If you can find one of those Jeep D44s that would be awesome, good luck if you can. But its still a D3 carrier.

Btw how much did you pay for that D60? And what year is it from?

You're crazy if you pass on the 60 in favor of a 30.
