Raising or lifting

I have a '97 4.0L Ranger which comes stock with independent front suspension (sadly). They dont call it the inferior front suspension for nothing. However I want to raise it somehow. I was thinking about doing nothing to the suspension but getting bigger tires. How big can i go before i have problems and what would anyone recommend as a good tire size?
