strange power steering problem- tempature related i think

95 ranger splash 2.3 5 speed 2wd

Since the weather has been turning colder I have been having this problem where on a cold start up where truck has been sitting 6+ hours or so it will not steer unless I give it a good jerk and then all is fine until it sits again. The problem happened once or twice back in September when we had a few cold mornings but it has been pretty consistent the last month or so. Also the problem used to be just to the left but in the last few days it has now gone both ways but like I said once I can finally get it to turn I have 0 problems with it until it sits again.

I tried searching and didn't find anything close to what I am experiencing but maybe I didn't use the right keywords or what have you but if you have a link that will help ill look at it or have any suggestions it would be appreciated.

Replaced parts in June
- power steering pump
- pressure line
- return line
- pressure switch (also replace this again the other day thinking possibly this was problem)
- gearbox

I replaced these parts because of a leak I had and figured why not just replace the whole system.

Did you ever figure this out? Our Ranger is doing the same thing. You described it exactly and we've had someone else check it out also but they can never find what is happening.

Ford tech said it was the gearbox but i really thought it was a pump/pressure issue so i replaced that based on the fact they basically refused to test the pressure and whatnot plus pump was under warranty. However that did not fix it it did turn out to be the gearbox but that was under warranty as well. It was strange ive never had a gearbox do that before or heard of it.

pulling problems

I've been having problems with the steering pulling to the right or left for months now. Sometimes its just a steady pull and sometimes its very abrupt. I replaced the steering box and it was ok for about a week . Then I added Friction Modifier ( Motocraft ) about 1 oz. and the pulling problem was fine for about 3 months. Now Its started up again. Any anwsers ??
