dum question

how do you tell if u have a 7.5 or 8.8 axle i have a 99 4x4 ranger with 4.10 but i dont know what size the are ?? also is there a way to tell what the spline count is without taking the axles out ???

look at the diff cover and you will probably see a rusty tag, with a bunch of numbers and letters on it. it will say 8.8 or 7.5 somewhere on it and have your gear ratio on it also

ya i found the tag and all that can be read on it is that it has 4.10s the rest of the tag is unreadable. Are the diff cover different or the # of bolts used to hold them on ??

I know an 8.8 is 10 bolts... not sure about the 7.5.

im almost certain you have an 8.8

your axle code is listed on your door tag. and either way youll have 28 splines

i always thought 4x4s had 8.8

i found out that the diff cover are diff for the 7.5 and the 8.8 here is a pic of the differances
