Front end issue... bad ball joint? wheel bearings?

When im backing out of a parking spot and hit the brakes, i can feel my front end kinda lunge and my brake peddle 'pushes' back some. I have a blown out dust boot on my ball joint has torn but it tore about 6 months ago and i continually grease it. Also when im turning it feels as though something in grinding. im thinking wheel bearings might be a possibility but ive had worn out bearings in the past and when im driving i dont get the same hum or grinding sound when i brake...

im at school right now so i dont want to work on my truck outside in the cold at our house so i have to wait til i get home.

any ideas would be of help, simple and cheap fixes are good too because ill be trading my truck in during the spring so i want it to run well when they look at it
