2003 2WD Inner tie rod replacement

I am still chasing a popping sound in the front end and I think it is coming from the right inner tie rod. I have removed the right one and I have a new Moog inner tie rod. The Moog instructions say nothing about any grease that should be put on the inner tie rod and it has no visible grease on it, should I put some grease on it? Any certain type of grease?

I wouldn't put a bunch of grease inside...but right where the boot seals, it wouldn't hurt to put some there. The thing is if you put too much grease in there and when you turn and the boot compresses, some of the grease could get pushed into that tube that equalizes the pressure between the two boots...and I mean it wouldn't necessarilly damage anything but then the chance of a boot slipping loose and getting water/etc up in there would increase.

Thanks. That makes sense. Another question I have is that the instructions mention holding the rack on the drivers side where the gear teeth are so the rack can't turn when remove the outer tie rod. I have noticed the teeth, but what would be something good to hold that with. Something with teeth might damage it. I guess it is possible to use and adjustable wrench with smooth jaws but I am not sure how well it would grip. The shaft where the gear teeth are located is shaped sort of like a "D". Flat on one side and the rest is round.
