Icon5 Explorer or Sport Trac leaf Questions...

So my Ranger leafs are shot... I got a shackle on there now, and a two inch block and it sits an inch lower than the front with only a 3 inch spindle lift.

So.... I don't want to run blocks anymore. I will be towing a 2200 lb trailer and car combo every now and then. Taking that into consideration, I think that a tow package Expo leaf pack would be ideal. Can someone give me some help on decoding the vin sticker so I can quickly spot some at a J/Y?

But... now I've heard about the mysterious Sport Trac leaf swap. I searched, and came up with not much on the subject. Would that be a better route? Or would it be too much lift in the rear. I would like a level to normal rake. Would they be better for the towing? Do they ride better than the Expo leafs?

Any and all help is appreciated.

i got almost 3 inches of lift out of my explorer leafs. i have a 4 spring leaf pack under my truck. if you run explorer leafs and beltech shackles you will have enough lift to be level

Yeah I read your thread and it was helpful. I was wondering if there was a 5 spring or something like that pack for when I tow my race car. I towed my toolbox home from work and now the darn thing sits even lower in the rear.

All the expo's I've seen yet are the 4 pack, but I've only been to one yard yet. But they supposedly have like 4 spring codes for the rear.

The yard in Centralia has like 4 Sport Tracs in it you could rip parts off of. On the differences, sorry, I'm of no help. But will be paying attention to this thread. I'm looking into ditching the 2.5" block and upgrading to a higher rate spring(Ranger K 3-leaf springs right meow).

shane...why the ranger ones? expos too stiff?

ya, as for the diff between sport tracs and regular expos...never got to figure that out either...you could just try em out anyways, not like it'd hurt you any.

you could also take and put one or two of your ranger leafs in with the explorer leafs. i dont think it would be as stiff as doing a AAL

I took mine to a local spring shop and he added one to each pack and re-arched them. I like them a lot. Rides great, but I haven't towed anything. Cost more but was worth it to me.

i like my explorer leafs a hell of a lot more than my stock ranger leafs. esp when i tow. when i have a bed full of wood and a trailer full. between the two thats around 4k. my truck doesnt squat to much. i say get the some 4 spring pack. they still ride decent on the highway and are stiff enough to now make your truck squat like crazy with a decent load

Yeah I think I will be making a road trip down there. I haven't called them yet to see their prices. I can get some 4 pack ones for $11.50 each locally at a U-pull, or $100 for the pair at a different lot if there is a difference with a tow package ones.

Anyone know the differences? Please? Anyone? lol

duuuuude, if you can get leafs that cheap, id buy like 4 total and use two of them to add some leafs into the other pack. people do it alll the time and for that price, you can mix and match what really works for you.

dude...mixing and matching leafs is not hard at all. you take the centering pins out and just whip out a grinder to keep the progressive look of the leafs and try it out.

you could even just take the main leaf from the other packs (cut off the eyes) and throw it directly under the main leaf of the packs your gunna use.

I was going to get any of the ones I'm buying to be rearched to factory specs anyways. But I might slip an extra leaf in there now. Now that you got me thinking in that direction it would be pretty easy to slap another one in there and put some straps back on.

I think I'll do that. Yeah. Good idea. Thanks!

Yeah. Cant get mad at you man, you always have good idea's and lots of good info.

Sooo.. Paycheck comes in today from L&I. Ima cash that bugger and get me two sets of leaf springs. Hopefully by Sunday I'll have a How To write up and lots of pictures.

Where do you guys think I should add in the leaf to make it a 5 pack? I was thinking have double of the second from the top. So it still rides nice on the top set, but once you load it it stiffens up quick for better control with the trailer. Or do you think I should double up the third from the top for that?

I drew and awesome MS paint to illustrate my idea. The RED leaf is the addition.

id just get a main, and cut the eyes off and put it under the actual main leaf.

Have you thought about if it will be level when your done? It only takes a 1/2 inch off to see a lean.

It sits about a full inch lower right now than the front. I can adjust it with the shackles

.

I was thinking about that, but I think I want to just run on one leaf to hopefully make it ride somewhat nice.. I dunno. I still think I will do it that way tho. Cut the eyes off and maybe an inch or two.

I mean left to right not front to back. I had a weak spring in my pack and it leaned to the passenger side. They had to arch mine 7/8 higher to ride level.

I used the ST leafs and they work great, I was able to remove my block and keep my ride height. I got a thread on here somewhere. I like the build your own leaf set idea, especially if you can get such a good deal on them. Ill keep watching this thread to see how it works out.
