replacing inner tie rods on Ford Ranger

1999 Ford Ranger, 3.0 liter V6, 2 wheel drive, coil spring front suspension.
I plan on replacing the inner tie rods on my Ranger. My question is: Do I have to remove the steering rack, as my Ford factory manual states to change the inner tie rods? It looks to me as if I remove the outer tie rod ends and the boots (bellows) I would have enough room to unscrew the inner tie rods while the rack is still on the truck. Thanks, billj

within the next few weeks i will be converting my inner tie rods to use heims. If i can safely do this to my truck i will be making more and sellign them, but for now another option is camburg's heimed steering.

look at camburg.com

No you do not have to remove the steering rack to do this.

How can I get the boot off without taking the rack off? Its right inside of the frame.

what are heims?

Please forgive my lack of knowledge, but I am rather new at doing my own suspension work. Could someone explain what a heims is. I assume it has to do with the rack and pinion steering(?) Thanks
