Can anyone offer a good source for torsion bars that might be a bit stiffer" than the F's that came on my truck stock?

Ford is going to be your only shot.

I've never heard anyone making aftermarket torsion bars for these trucks.

 

I'll just have to go to Ford then...I thought there might someone offering "after market' units.

Wouldn't make sense. If you are spending money in the aftermarket, get something better like coilovers.

Also, what's with the "Tarantula truck" mantra stuff in your thread titles?

 

There ARE no aftermarket outlets for Torsion Bars. Torsion Bars must be purchased through Ford. Period. And the reason I intend to stay with torsion bars is the fact that I like the way ride, the way my truck handles with them (going to coils would be a "Craps Shoot" as to whether I liked them or not), My truck was designed to have a torsion bar suspension system, and to top it all off...that is what I want. And I only have to satisfy myself with any modifications I make to my truck. So I am staying with torsion bars and will "lift" my truck with lift spindles.

Please understand, I appreciate ANY input on the questions I ask or the discussions that arise when I write of the modifications I plan to make. I assure you they are ALL (everyone of them) are duly noted and filed in a folder on my e-mail account. As a matter of fact I decided to refrain from major work on the 3.0L engine. I was told it just wasn't worth the effort and I couldn't justify the expense. So I'll have to be satisfied with letting her breath a little easier with JBA Headers, a CAI, and a custom dual exhaust. The slight increase in power and the (hoped for) gain in gas mileage on the highway will come in the form if a computer reprogramming or a computer chip.

"Tarantula Truck" is no mantra. Sentimentsal people often times "name" inanimate objects. I call my 10 acre spread here in N.E. Texas, "Tranquility Base". After being raised in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, I find this place to be very tranquil by comparison. I must admit I "pirated" the name from the first words ever spoken by Neil Armstrong as he stepped onto the face of the moon. Some people name their trucks, or their favorite shotgun, or their tractor . Some people might call their truck "Ol' Yeller", or "Big Blue", "or "Big Red", or in the case of my first Ford P/U, I called her "Henrietta"" after Henry Ford. The name I picked for this particular project i took from a conversation with a very dear friend who, after looking over some drawings of what I plan the truck to look like a couple of years ago, made the comment, "...man that's gonna be a bad *** looking truck...looks like a Tarantula waiting to jump all over somebody...". Cancer took Phil this last spring...and remembering his "Tarantula" comment...I decided to call her the "Tarantula Truck". I hope people will take no offense at my sentimentality. But to be brutally honest...if they DO take offense I just don't really give a Tinker's Damn.

Obviously coil overs are a ride and handling improvement. It's not for discussion. The biggest issue is that coilovers ake some work and fab to install. Only Ford makes the torsion bars and I'm pretty sure searching the forms will help provide some purchase links.

"Tarantula truck suspension" sounds like a brand name. I was confused also. None the less, I wouldn't sink too much $$ into a 3.0 ranger (not sure if 4wd?) because unfortunately you will not get much for your money back. But a lil bit of $ into quality ride and engine performance isn't bad.

 

Well...we all have our opinions. In fact...you are probably right about coils. I won't even argue the point. God knows auto makers the world over have designed and built cars and trucks around the coil spring system far more often than the torsion bar concept. But, I like my torsion bars and I plan on keepin' em'.

But I still listen to and continue to file away all the comments, ideas, and suggestions I receive.

I know you gave me part numbers but the Parts Department had no idea what the numbers were in reference to. So they looked them up and the "B" grade bars go for $250 per. I was told by the representative I spoke with that with Ford torsion bars stifflness increases exponentially. "F" Class bars are provide the "softest" ride. He "B" Class bar offers twice he stiffness of the "F" Class bar. And the "1" Class bars provide twice the stiffness as do the "B" Class bars...or 4 times the stiffness of the Class "F" bars. I was further told that "1" bars are (or were) only used on the Ford F-350 and heavier trucks. They were offered, as I understand it, as a factory option and that there have been quite a few that have driven the coil/torsion bar combination and will often request the bars to be removed or changed for a "softer" bar after they have had them a few months. The torsion bar/ coil spring combination has been removed as additional option and is no longer offered.

Just sayin'.

 

Time to get a new Ford 'representative' then....he doesn't know Rangers like we do.

#1 bars were factory standard on quite a few Rangers over all sorts of years. Tons of guys have upgraded to them - you're not breaking new ground here.

That said, it does look like the thread I copied those part #'s from might have had a minor typo.

They go for well under $250 apiece everyday of the week. You are getting screwed.

All the bars with that number are listed for 2.3L and 4.0 engines. Think they'll work on my truck...with a 3.0?

Sounds good.

Just for information purposes - Ranger torsion bars are all 'interchangeable' if the part number is the same, they will work just fine.

Engine size (or even model year) doesn't come into play for them.
