i can tell you that anyone with anyWD ranger running 33's has had to get their speedometer recalibrated. some did it, some didnt. if you want your speedo to be correct, it needs to be recalibrated.

a little old, but I came across this and was also interested as I will be getting larrger tires... what goes into recalibrating a speedometer? I've seen a few off-road companies (like spuerlift) that have devices for it, but is there anything else to get it reading right?

Some dealerships will recal your speedo, one of the ford dealerships in town did mine when I put the 32's on and my xcal did it when I put my 33's on.

2001+ have the tire calibration info in the PCM. It can be reflashed by a knowledgeable Ford dealer tech but there are limits to how far they can go. This might cost $100 or less.

A company like Bamachips can do it along with a high performance engine/auto trans calibration for about $400.

There are also aftermarket solid state conversion boxes that can be used to adjust the VSS pulse frequency to correct the speedo input to the correct 8000 cycles/mile. They cost about $200.

I don't have any 96 literature but I am reasonably sure that it uses a signal generator that plugs into the transmission or transfer case where a traditional speedometer cable would live. The dealer should be able to get alternate drive/driven gears for the SG to correct the speedo, again just like a cable driven speedo.

Or you could use option 3 in my other post above and try the $200 aftermarket black box to correct the VSS signal frequency.

i got 33's put on my 03 and ford said they didnt wanna recalibrate it cause it could jsut cause more problems so i drove beside a buddy in a stock ranger on the highway and popped the speedo needle on at whatever speed and it works amazing now... was pretty tricky to do but hell it worked awsome!

i put 33's on mine and i'm not gonna bother fixing the speedo. the way i look at it is the miles on the odometer are lower than the actual, so my bumper to bumper warranty is good for almost 40k now.
